Australian artist Jill Scott was taped to the wall of Franklin Furnace in 1979; subsequently her career has focussed upon the mediatized body.Following are statements by distinguished colleagues:

The book “CODED CHARACTERS” and the DVD with related film documents carry the reader through three chapters and continents: ‘Analog Figures’ (USA1975-82), ‘Digital Beings’ (Australia 1982-92) and ‘Mediated Nomads’ (Europe 1992-2002).

From surveillance-performance-events to video art onto new computer art and inter-active cinema: Leading theorists analyse the development of the Australian artist Jill Scott whose work has pointed to a new concept of the mediated body. – Marille Hahne, Editor

“CODED CHARACTERS” provides a challenging perspective on a singular vision and gives access to an art that infuses its technology with humanity. – Roy Ascott

Scott’s models of interaction probe new ways of learning which could easily become of the classrooms of the twenty-first century. – Anne Marsh

6. Stanya Kahn, FF Alumn, screens new film in NYC June 7, and also in LA

Stanya Kahn, FF Alumn, and Harry Dodge’s collaborative short film: “Winner” is playing in New York City and in Los Angeles in June!

“Winner” has been having odd and cheery success at film festivals from Slamdance to London, Minneapolis to Buffalo. More humor and pathos, the films stars LOIS, a reticent sweepstakes winner who doggedly avoids receiving her prize. A scultpor, a musician, a fan of Michael Jackson, LOIS manages to morph an ad spot into a mini-documentary about her art work.

[With] her own incredibly sensitive eye and astoundingly unique
vision…Dodge is a filmmaker of immense imagination and unlimited compassion.” “DAZED AND CONFUSED

“Stanya Kahn is an amazing writer and performer. You just can’t categorize her. she plays various outrageous characters as if she were channeling.”
“NEW YORK TIMES

In New York: Saturday June 7th at 3:15 pm at the New Festival

11. Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid, FF Visionary, at AMMI. TONITE

Hey you all. This is another headz up on an event that I’ve been working on for a while. Sorry ’bout the mass e-mail, but that’s how it goes… anyway, this week coming up I have a special screening of my remix of D.W. Griffith’s infamous “Birth of a Nation” showing at the American Museum of the Moving Image. It ain’t the Matrix, but it almost could be! The “Rebirth of a Nation” project is based on some of the paradoxes that seem to drive America in this day and age – propaganda, disinformation, racial paranoia, and the abuse of public office. The original film was used as a recruiting device for the Klan, and it was played at Klan rallies and whatnot… And if you think about it, the Bush election of 2000 could have been a scene straight from the movie. It’s a pleasure to remix the film into something that turns against all of this stuff. Come on out and check the vibe on this – it’s another conceptual art event brought to you by Subliminal Kid Productions, so to speak. Here’s the scenario: This is THE REMIX!!! Think twice next time you hear the title “Grand Master” or “Grand Wizard” – a.k.a. Grand Master Flash or Grand Wizard Theodore – those are Klan titles too!!! Funny how history works, eh?

Oh yeah – I forgot to mention – I have my new remix project out, Dubtometry, with Mad Professor and the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry manning the dub-listics on the dub-wise “Optometry” remix scenario. The science of vision “optometrix” becomes the sound of science with J-Live, Mad Professor, Alter Echo, Karsh Kale, I-Sound, and others remixing material from the “Optometry” project… And last but not least, there’s a limited edition mix CD that I just did for one of my favorite magazines, Ad Busters, that’s on newsstands now. I had a whole bunch of friends and allies in the culture wars (artists against the concept of totalitarian America!) give me tracks for the mix – people like Coldcut, Mad Professor, Michael Franti, Stephan Smith, Public Enemy, Annie Difranco etc etc check it out – www.adbusters.org and here’s the info for the show: The museum show details:

Thursday, May 29, at 7:30 p.m.
Rebirth of A Nation: A work-in-progress
Performance by DJ Spooky at
the American Museum of the Moving Image Queens, NYC

Tickets are $15 (or $10 for Museum members) and can be purchased in advance by calling the Museum at 718-784-4520. The Museum is located at 35 Avenue and 36 Street, in Astoria, Queens. Subway: R or V trains (R or G on weekends) to Steinway Street or N train to 36 Avenue. For further information, please visit http://www.movingimage.us
