Homeland Exhibition

An exhibition of works that critically examine the concept of homeland, as it draws attention to the recent mobilization of the term as well as its broader historical connotations. Participating artists are Ayreen Anastas, Matthew Buckingham, Hans Haacke, Hachivi Edgar Heap of Birds, Jonathan Horowitz, Institute for Applied Autonomy, Emily Jacir, Annette Lemieux, Arnold Mesches, Nils Norman, Daniel Pflumm, Barbara Pollack, Michael Rakowitz, Francesco Simeti, and Olav Westphalen.
As a form of response to the new rhetoric and legislation of this term, Homeland brings together works made just prior to the 1991 Gulf War, through September 11, and up to the recent invasion of Iraq by military forces led by the United States and Great Britain. Together these works raise questions about belonging and exile, and investigate the relationships between nationalism and territory. In the process they draw attention to shifting geopolitical spaces and the cultural contradictions and differences that shape them.
The exhibition maintains that the conception of American homeland does not stand isolated from others and suggests that the implications of its new use are still unfolding. Drawing on the scope of the term itself, the works presented in this exhibition question and further complicate the notion of homeland at this time of war and increasing threats to civil liberties.
While some of the artists, like Ayreen Anastas and Emily Jacir, explicitly comment on homeland as a term, others, such as Nils Norman and the Institute for Applied Autonomy, discuss its manifestations in the spaces of our daily lives. Still others work at the social systems that articulate homeland, as when Annette Lemieux, Daniel Pflumm, and Francesco Simeti appropriate news media images from sources like Life Magazine, CNN, and The New York Times. Matthew Buckingham and Hans Haacke question patriotism in the United States, through the history of Mt. Rushmore and the contradictions of the first Gulf War, respectively. Jonathan Horowitz and Olav Westphalen critique the privileged position of the popular and corporate entities that drive American hegemony, and their figurative and literal relationship to the federal government. Finally, Michael Rakowitz and Hachivi Edgar Heap of Birds focus on variable conceptions of the public addressed by homeland, while Barbara Pollack and Arnold Mesches situate the individual within homeland purview.

A series of events have been organized to accompany the exhibtion; all events will take place at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center, The Graduate Center, The City University of New York, 365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street.

Wednesday, June 4, 7 pm
Speaking of Home Filmed in Germany and Lebanon, these experimental documentaries by Shelly Silver and collaborators Walid Ra’ad and Jayce Salloum explore the language of homeland from multiple and often conflicting viewpoints. The program is introduced by Shelly Silver and followed by an informal discussion.
Wednesday, June 11, 7 pm
Identifying Homeland From propaganda to details of the everyday, the video works featured in this program take apart associations surrounding the term homeland. Identifying Homeland includes works by Jem Cohen, Duki Dror and Rashid Mashawari, Keith Sanborn, and others.
Gallery tours will be held every Saturday at 2pm with one of the Homeland curators.
This exhibition was organized by the 2002-03 Helena Rubinstein Curatorial Fellows of the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program: Craig Buckley, Tanya Leighton, Sara Reisman, Emily Rothschild, and Nat Trotman, in an ongoing collaboration between the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program and The Graduate Center, The City University of New York.

Women Photographers from the Collections of Grolier Club Members

Works by over eighty women photographers are the subject of this exhibition, drawn from the collections of Grolier Club members. Exploring a little-known aspect of Grolier member collecting, the exhibition unites modernist and postmodern photographers from Berenice Abbott to Helen Levitt, from Nan Goldin to Cindy Sherman. This gathering of over 130 photographs and photographically-illustrated books serves as an evaluation of women’s contributions to camera art and documentation, three decades after the first feminists brought female photographers to wide public attention.
Organized thematically, “The Auroral Light” shows how these generations of women photographers have tackled portraits and figure studies, the landscape, cityscape, and still life, and how they experiment with set-up subjects, photocollage, photograms, and the like. Well-known photographers such as Margaret Bourke-White, Imogen Cunningham, Lotte Jacobi, and Louise Dahl-Wolfe are represented by signature images as well as lesser-known prints. Less familiar names, including Eva Watson-Schutz, Carlotta Corpron, and Edith Worth, come from the ranks of photographers who worked in the first half of the 20th century. Younger photographers include Ellen Carey, Susan Derges, Sally Mann, and Catherine Opie, while Mari Mahr, DoDo Jin Ming, Barbara Pollack, and Liz Rideal are among the newcomers.
Portraits of photographers and writers are a strong suit of “The Auroral Light,” reflecting the Grolier Club mission to preserve and promulgate knowledge of books and the book arts. Here are photographs of James Joyce by Giselle Freund, Janet Flanner by Berenice Abbott, Henry Miller by Mary Ellen Mark, Paul Strand by Lotte Jacobi, and Irving Penn by Lisa Fonssagrives, among other portraits. The earliest photograph in the exhibition is by the passionate Victorian, Julia Margaret Cameron, of her friend Alfred, Lord Tennyson as “The Dirty Monk.”
“The Auroral Light” is curated by Anne Hoy, former curator at the International Center of Photography, and Kimball Higgs, Gagosian Gallery, and the show is sponsored by the Club’s Committee on Prints, Drawings, & Photographs. The Grolier Club members who lent to this exhibition do not collect photographs by women exclusively: major contributors such as Nancy and Robert Grover of Hartford, CT, collect contemporary photographs that experiment with perception and expand the boundaries of the medium; Donald Oresman of New York City collects images of people reading; Neale Albert and George Meredith, of Manhattan and Upper Montclair, NJ, respectively, acquire photographs from photographers they have known. Among the motives for the exhibition’s focus on women photographers was to call attention to women as collectors of books and book arts and to celebrate the contributions of women to the life of the Grolier Club.

Live classical Indian ragas in our beautiful garden setting.
Alok Dutt studied North Indian Classical Bansuri flute with Hariprasad Chaurasia and with Raganeth Seth. Alok is also an accomplished Western Classical violinist and pianist who performs throughout the NYC area. Bill Buchen is a composer, jazz drummer and percussionist who has studied Indian Classical music with Kadar Khan, Anand Kumar Mallik, Zakir Hussein, and Samir Chattergee . Along with his wife Mary Buchen, co-directors of Sonic Architecture he designs interactive sculptural installations for science museums, public plazas, childrens museums and art galleries throughout the world. In New York City their work may be seen at Socrates Scultpure Park, New York Hall of Science, Liberty Science Center, Kissena Park, Underhill Park, Madame Curie Park, Playground for All Children, and the fence for the 6th Street and Ave B garden.

Set in an abstraction of a television studio for an Italian talk show, sexual scandal, domination, xenophobia and terrorist controversy are the sensational fodder feeding this parody of western civilization’s collision with global culture:
A gregarious and vivacious hostess maneuvers the audience and her guests through topics of current affairs, focusing on the contamination and standardization of beef and dairy product and a popular scandal of abduction and terrorism charges brought about by a young bourgeois Italian girl against an internationally known, charismatic activist. Bovine-themed burlesque breaks up the action.

GV/AS is pleased to present an exhibition by the artist, Mike Asente, entitled, The Colors of, the consummation of a series of drawings and sculptures initiated by the artist approximately eight years ago.
In these latest two- and three-dimensional works, Asente distills his earlier, more anatomically graphic portraits to the vestigial element of color. Continuing his use of store-bought “collage frames,” he exploits their multiple mat cutouts to echo the spatial absence implied in his subjects and to underscore the irony in his work.
Asente has recently integrated embroidery into his vocabulary to, “free my hand from the weight of the history of drawing and to more strongly link my graphic work with the fabrics and textures of my three-dimensional pieces.”
His meticulously procured lush velvets, tactile wools and printed fabrics form a reductive, decorative formalism. Combined with the soft pliability of fabric, balances the artist’s inquiry into relationships of the body to the public arena, the self as it interfaces with popular culture and the mutable borderline where erotica functions as either prurient or transformational.
Mike Asente was born in Berlin, Germany. He now lives and works in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He studied at Virginia Commonwealth University and at the Tyler School of Art. And was the director of the exhibition space, Everything is Everything, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the mid 1990’s. He has exhibited widely both in the US and internationally, including exhibitions at Franklin Furnace in NYC, Diverse Works in Houston, Texas, Fredericke Taylor Gallery, NYC and La Fondation de la Tapisserie in Belgium.

The Department of Anthropology and the Department of Every Day Life of the P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E Museum of Contemporary Art (PMCA) proudly present the project ‘A Perfect Place’.
‘A Perfect Place’ brings together the snap shots of Tadej Pogacar’s roam through three UK cities during his residency with B+B at Home. The act of walking, as Michel de Certeau states, is a ‘pedestrian speech act’ connected to everyday experience and personal voices in the city.
‘A Perfect Place’ celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the PMCA. In honour of this occasion, you are invited to an afternoon of food and wine, video screenings and exhibitions. The Director of the PMCA, Tadej Pogacar, will introduce the latest activities of the P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E Museum. The FIRST ANNUAL B+B BENEFIT AUCTION, with special guestauctioneer Alasdair Hopwood, will close the event. This is your chance tobid for a piece of the P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E entitled ‘AN IDEAL COMMUNITY’.
The material gathered during Tadej Pogacar’s residency will also be available for visitors at the ACF from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 May.

10. Ken Friedman, FF Alumn, announces free digital version of Fluxus Performance Workbook, now online
Performance Research has released a free digital edition of the long unavailable Fluxus Performance Workbook, a collection of short performance works and event scores by over forty artists.
The first examples of what were to become Fluxus event scores date back to John Cage’s famous class at The New School where artists such as George Brecht, Al Hansen, Allan Kaprow, and Dick Higgins began to create art works and performances in musical form. One of these forms was the event. Events tend to be scored in brief verbal notes known as event scores. In a general sense, they are proposals, propositions, and instructions for different kinds of actions.
To accompany a special Fluxus issue of Performance Research, Ken Friedman, Owen Smith, and Lauren Sawchyn edited a fortieth anniversary edition of the Fluxus Performance Workbook. The workbook is now available in a free electronic edition. This book can be viewed on-line or downloaded. The download is a .pdf file that can also be printed.
This expanded and updated edition of the Workbook contains scores by George Brecht, Jean Dupuy, Dick Higgins, Joe Jones, Bengt af Klintberg, Milan Knizak, George Maciunas, Larry Miller, Nam June Paik, Mieko Shiomi, Robert Watts, and many more.

Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) is pleased to present Performance Artist Cary Peppermint as he presents a full version release of “Conductor Number Seventeen Version 4.0” the latest in his ongoing series of performances or “Technolectures” currently incorporating Jai Cha (an unprofessional dancer with a professional agenda) and CN-17 SPORTSWEAR by designer Eriko Tamura.
Conductor Number Seventeen V4.0 is Cary Peppermint’s most recent version in a continuing series of multi-media performances first conceived by the artist for “PORT”, a pioneering exhibition of new media technologies and online strategies initiated by Artnetweb at the MIT List Visual Arts Center in January of 1997. Peppermint’s Conductor performances deal directly and brazenly with issues of mediation by incorporating live video/surveillance technology that requires viewers to observe in simultaneity the actual performance event and the real-time (live) approximation of that event. In Conductor performances Peppermint engages multiple technologies to deliver his own discourse of spoken language and techno music that he terms “Technolectures.” Through both high & low technologies including halogen work-lamps, laptop computers, and even a ukulele, Peppermint questions the effectiveness and potential of the “live” performer.
Past performances have included varied performance-art “improv-sessions” including Peppermint conducting his Technolectures from the confines of a pine-box for Conductors Number One and Nine to sealing himself off completely in a 14′ by 14′ room for “Conductor Number Zero.”
Peppermint lives in New York where he consistently disseminates his work through an independent website of information-art called “Restlessculture.net” (http://www.restlessculture.net/). Peppermint’s work has been supported by cutting edge institutions such as The Franklin Furnace. He has exhibited internationally in festivals and centers of contemporary art, such as Osnabrück’s European Media Art Festival, Walker Art Center’s first major survey of internet art, “Beyond Interface” and The Whitney Museum of Art’s “Artport.” Peppermint’s performances have taken place at The Kitchen, Postmaster’s Gallery, ISEA and recently at the Center for Contemporary Art in
Glasgow.

Lily Tomlin, FF Alumn, will receive this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The award will be bestowed on October 26th in Washington, D.C.
