Light: Visionary Perspectives
13.07.24 – 21.04.25
Aga Khan Museum, Toronto, Canada
Marking the Museum’s 10th anniversary, Light: Visionary Perspectives delves into the omnipresence and impact of light. Kimsooja’s application of diffraction grating film on the windows surrounding the museum’s courtyard reveals the full spectrum of visible light. Throughout the day, her work illustrates the natural transformation of sunlight into its spectrum without direct control or manipulation. More information here: https://agakhanmuseum.org/whats-on/light-visionary-perspectives/
Forest Festival of the Arts Okayama
28.9. – 24.11.24
Okayama Prefecture, Japan
All 2,188 windows at the Old Tsuyama Fan-shaped Locomotive Depot are covered with diffraction grating film, transforming natural light into rainbow rays through nanoscale prism patterns. This site-specific installation uses intangible light to reflect the structure of the universe, drawing from ‘obangsaek,’ the traditional Korean color spectrum, and the ancient East Asian concept of the Five Phases. ENNOVA Art Biennale
27.10.24 – 7.5.25
ENNOVA Art Museum, Langfang, Hebei, China
Kimsooja is participating in the inaugural Ennova Art Biennale in Langfang, China. Curated by Fumio Nanjo, this year’s Biennale, themed Multiple Future: New Visions of Our Life, explores contemporary art’s role in rethinking human creativity and global challenges. Kimsooja’s work is featured in the chapter Expansion on Sounds and Voices, which examines sound as a unique, immaterial medium.
Kimsooja’s installation is a replication of John Cage’s work originally created for the last Paris Biennale in 1985. Kimsooja first encountered this piece during her six-month scholarship at Écoles des Beaux-Arts in Paris, awarded by the French government. In 2019, when invited by the city of Poitiers, France, to create a city-wide art project, Kimsooja sought to exhibit this work and reached out to the John Cage Foundation for information. Unfortunately, the foundation was unaware of the piece, and her vision for its realization could not come to fruition. Recognizing the importance of this work in shaping her perspective as a young artist, Kimsooja decided to replicate it for this biennale, as part of artistic director Fumio Nanjo’s exploration of sound. Capturing Dignity, Curated by Ann Rosen
December 4-27,2024, Opening Reception: Wednesday, December 4th 6-9pm to be held at El Barrio ArtSpace PS 109, 215 East 99th Street, NYC.
Photography by Irma Bohorquez-Geisler, Kathy Shorr, Nancy La Lanne, Stephanie Graham, Ann Rosen
Film Screening: Wednesday, December 11th, 2024 with a half hour video, Black Girl Magic’s Vanne McMillan, by Julia O’Farrow
Here’s the rest of the info.
Capturing Dignity is an exhibition of photographic artworks by five women photographers examining concepts of community and portraiture with dignity and respect. Each woman has searched in her community to highlight those who have been overlooked. The works on view explore the lives and stories of all women, immigrants, victims of gun violence, women who were formerly homeless veterans or formerly incarcerated, recovering addicts, and relationships between African American men. Together, this collection of works explores the unique intimacy between documentary photographers and their subjects which allows them to capture a depth of beauty and humanity.
About the Artists / Projects
Irma Bohórquez‐Geisler has been creating a long-term photo-documentary essay, Simple Moments of an Emerging Presence, which began in 2001. Its aim is to document the historical migration of Mexican immigrants into New York City, especially Staten Island, focusing on how immigrant communities establish themselves in their adoptive country by bringing and adapting their rich culture.
Kathy Shorr’s project, SHOT: We the Mothers, the second project in a series exploring the effects of gun violence, features photographs of mothers from Philadelphia and Miami who have lost children to gun violence along with interviews. In SHOT: 101 Survivors of Gun Violence in America, Shorr’s original project in this series, she focused her attention on survivors of gun violence – people who have been shot and survived the experience.
Nancy La Lanne creates intimate photographic portraits that celebrate the beauty of all women’s bodies. Recognizing that women are often conditioned to doubt compliments or feel the need to downplay their beauty, she aims to highlight the diversity and uniqueness of each individual. Her work provides a welcoming space for each person she photographs to explore and embrace their true self.
Ann Rosen’s photographs from her Being Seen project acknowledge the power and strength of all women, and the importance of seeing the humanity in each one as a first step towards fostering understanding and empathy. Rosen, a former art teacher, conducts workshops with women from marginalized communities. These women collaborated with her on their portraits which reflect the way they wanted to be seen—the instability, uncertainty, and complexity connected with shelter living and the struggle to recreate a life.
Stephanie Graham’s project Love You Bro explores relationships and how affection is expressed between black men. As an African-American artist, Graham creates photographs, videos and installations that are armed with humor, satire, and soul to make otherwise difficult conversations on race and gender easier and more comfortable in this increasingly divisive political and cultural climate.
About the Film Screening
On Wednesday, December 11th, the gallery will present a screening of “Black Girl Magic’s Vanne McMillan” followed by a discussion with the film’s award-winning director, Julia O’Farrow. The film explores the rise of entrepreneur and fashion designer, Vanne McMillan, founder of Black Girl Magic by Vanne. O’Farrow is known for her film Beyond the Bars/No Extended Embraces,” which tells the stories of six women with partners in prison. Her work has been showcased at various film festivals and is included in notable collections, such a the Langston Hughes and Donnell Public Library’s video archive. O’Farrow is a founding member of the Black Documentary Collective (BDC) and has contributed as a guest curator for the Anthology Film Archive’s “New Filmmakers” series.

Followed by a Q&A with Producer Andrew Moore, Film Subject Frances Beatty, and Ellen Levy, author of A Book About Ray – available for sale at concession.
USA, 2002
Directed by John Walter
Produced by Andrew Moore
90 min. DCP.
A RASHOMON-like portrait of Ray Johnson, whose life and death — and all the art that came in between — made him “New York’s most famous unknown artist” (Grace Glueck, NY Times). Johnson was a fixture in New York City postwar bohemia: an engimatic, whimsical, latter-day Dadaist, collagist extraordinaire, and the father of mail art. His performances amused and astounded his who’s-who-in-the-art-world list of friends. Johnson had a way of blurring the boundaries between art and life: a buyer who convinced him to drop the price on a $2000 piece to $1500 received artwork with one quarter of the image removed. HOW TO DRAW A BUNNY fashions a biographical mystery tale from fascinating, often hilarious stories told by Johnson’s contemporaries, including Christo, Chuck Close, Roy Lichtenstein, Judith Malina, Frances Beatty, Richard Feigen, James Rosenquist, and the Sag Harbor police chief who investigated his mysterious 1995 death. With original music by Max Roach. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.
