1. John Kelly, FF Alumn, summer news
Dear Friends,
The broken arm I sustained 8 months ago is well on the mend – physical therapy has gotten me to about 85% mobility. This healing process is the main reason it has been a reasonably quiet year for me. With the year nearly half over, I wanted to let you know about some of the smaller events that I have been involved with ~
The long-anticipated We Started A Nightclub: The Birth of the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge as Told by Those Who Lived It has been released!
Purchase the book HERE (https://someseriousbusiness.org/product/pyramid-cocktail-lounge/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR1UEVNERvRkZmke8rJTflJi5PbrQ1_ECnGcB4ojsRpkdqUcmPD_cvz4IZs_aem_ZmFrZWR1bW15MTZieXRlcw)
We Started A Nightclub: The Birth of the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge as Told by Those Who Lived It was released in conjunction with the exhibition Pyramid Pioneers (https://www.howlarts.org/event/pyramid-pioneers/) at Howl! Happening, as well as performances at Baker Falls, and a multi-page feature in New York Magazine (https://nymag.com/magazine/toc/2024-05-06.html).
East Village supergroup Rimbaud Hattie:
L-R: Doug Bressler, John Kelly, Heather Litteer, Julie Hair
I am thrilled to be included as one of 7 artists in the new LGBTQ+ NYC ARTISTS ARCHIVE PROJECT, spearhead by Alyce Dissette and Linda Chapman, with its launch at the recent exhibition of photographs at the BAM Rudin Family Gallery. To read an interview about the project with Amy Cassello, BAM’s newly appointed Artistic Director click HERE (https://www.autostraddle.com/lgbtq-nyc-artists-archive-project-at-bam/). The Archive’s new website is HERE (https://www.lgbtqartistsarchive.org/).
Performing with Doug Bressler at the Visual AIDS VAVA VOOM benefit honoring Philip Yenawine, Lola Flash, and Brian Butterick, at The City Winery on June 5, 2024.
One final thing. With my reduced performance schedule I decided to dive back into painting after many years, so I took a week-long intensive at the Art Students League: Portrait Painting with a Limited Palette with the fantastic Seattle-based painter and instructor Dominique Medici.
Have a great summer!
~ John

6. Ana Mendieta, FF Alumn, at Musée des beaux-arts La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, thru Oct. 27
Galerie Lelong & Co. is pleased to announce that Ana Mendieta: Search for Origin is on view at Musée des beaux-arts La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland through October 27, 2024.
Ana Mendieta: Search for Origin brings together around 70 works covering more than fifteen years of production (1968-1985) of the Cuban-born, American artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985). The exhibition explores how the artist never ceased to reinvent herself, developing a new sculptural language, often ephemeral, sometimes performative, always nourished by her research into original myths and rock art. It does not intend to be retrospective nor exhaustive. It celebrates the relevance of a contemporary, political, and vibrant work. Ana Mendieta: Search for Origin includes works presented to the public for the first time, including four of her paintings made between 1969 and 1971, the reconstruction of installations, and a set of photographs, some of which were only discovered in September 2022.
The exhibition is conceived and produced by MO.CO Montpellier Contemporain, France, in collaboration with MUSAC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León and Musée des beaux-arts La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.

10. Julie Gribble, FF Member, receives Carle Honor for KidLit TV
I am overwhelmed. A Carle Honor for KidLit TV! Can I tell you I cried when I heard the news? I can’t express how much it means to me. KidLit TV is a labor of love buoyed by the support of my incredibly understanding hubby, my hunny bunny, who knows all about the hard work that goes into each project, and a fantastic team of authors, illustrators, educators, and filmmakers who love being part of our thriving kidlit community. I’m beyond thrilled to be included among this year’s outstanding honorees. XO Thank you! The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art
