Weekly Spotlight: Flowers in the Basement, FF FUND recipient 2023-24, at Participant, Manhattan, Jan. 21
Flowers in the Basement is a collective consisting of Kite, Mel Elberg, Alisha B. Wormsley, Tsedaye Makonnen, and Amy Ruhl formed to create new work and to speculate on radical alternatives to our current forms of reproductive labor. Bringing together a group of core collaborators working in vast fields of inquiry — Afrofuturism; queer, speculative, intersectional and Marxist feminisms, Lakota epistemologies; and African migration narratives — their mode of collaboration forges collectivity while respecting the autonomy of each artists’ individual praxis.
Flowers in the Basement’s “Women and Children” uses the “demon text” of second-wave feminism, “The Dialectic of Sex” (Shulamith Firestone, 1970), as a jumping off point to offer a contemporary, polyvocal response to revolutionary demands for gender abolition, artificial reproduction, child liberation, and cybernetic communism.

Micki and Rob met in Grad School, at the Ohio State University, back when it was just
Ohio State University, when they were both accepted to create an art work for an
Exhibition at the Riffe Center sponsored by the Glass Arts Society. They had nothing in
common except two things:
a. They were not known for making sculptures with glass.
b. They both loved Christmas.
Thus began their 30+-year friendship.
They made some work together…
Like that time when Rob painted his entire apartment blue and Micki built a trough of
water in it dressed as a mime sitting on a tall chair writing for 24 hours as the blue water consumed her.
Or that time when they locked themselves in Hopkins Hall Gallery for 48 hours, Micki
once again writing and Rob constructing a wall out of Peanut Butter and Jelly.
Rob also got to play a cello in a performance Micki staged inside of a structure made of bedsprings. This fortuitous occasion brought Rob back from Washington State which changed the entire course of his life.
Rob is the reason Micki still creates Holiday cards every year. The first collaborative card (now lost) was created in said Blue Apartment with another friend, dancer Thomas.

Ken Butler is an artist and musician whose Hybrid musical instruments, collage artworks, performances and other works explore the interaction and transformation of common and uncommon objects, altered images, and diverse sounds as function and form collide in the intersection of art and music.

“Falling Sideways Off the Edge of the Earth” had a long gestation before I dove into my deepest passions and fleshed out the character of a female physicist in hiding as a psychic, whose ideas about consciousness I developed creatively in sync with the establishing of mysterianism, a recently accredited school of physics.
This scientific nod occurring parallel to my poetic musings opened up a rich world. It is now the foundation of my evolving series on topics I consider essential to protect and preserve the best of what we have been taught to believe resides in the ‘human’ in humanity.
I am indebted to a line of women artists and their invaluable help in giving my play an onstage life. Starting with Anita Durst who acted in the first workshop she also supported – Director Kat Yen for a table read @Yale and the most thrilling cab rides before and after past Yale Rep –
And most importantly, C.C. Kellogg, Facilitating Director of Invulnerable Nothings for a BARN Lab residency in 2022 that crystalized the version of ‘Falling..” that had Crystal Field legendary Founder of Theater for the New City propose these two wonderful companies co-produce the world premier of “Falling Sideways…” together.

Are You Free on Saturday from 4-7 PM? is an installation of hundreds of handmade pronouncements collected by poet Dr. Kenneth Goldsmith from the streets and subways of New York City over the past four decades. The works on view range from scary to silly, from terse suggestions to indecipherably complex amalgams of mathematical figuring, philosophical posturing, and political ranting. The entreaties tend to the impassioned and visceral. Whether the ideas are presented in uniquely beautiful calligraphy or scribbled, illegible palimpsests, the creators all seek to have their ideas recognized, many silently urging their fellow New Yorkers to right wrongs both personal and universal.
Goldsmith has long collected these mostly anonymous proclamations because he sees them—whether obsessive, splenetic, militant, psychically intense or just plain fascinating— as the work of fellow poets. The title of this exhibition is taken from a quote from one of his found postings, which has ten tear-off tabs at the bottom, nine say “Yes,” one says “No” – the everlasting wonderment created by the fact that the who, what, where, and why of this invitation will likely never surface.
Together, Goldsmith and curator Harley Spiller aim to explore the mystery of street poets and further public dialogue about their heady, provocative, and artful expressions. The exhibition is accompanied by the publication of Goldsmith’s recent book, NYC Street Poets and Visionaries (JBE Books, Paris, 2023).
Kenneth Goldsmith (b. 1961) is an American poet and critic living in New York City. He has published thirty-two books including ten of poetry. Since 2020, he has been the ongoing artist-in-residence at the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also teaches. In 2013, he was appointed the Museum of Modern Art’s first poet laureate. In 1996, Goldsmith founded UbuWeb, an online archive of hundreds of thousands of freely downloadable avant-garde artifacts.
Harley Spiller (b. 1959) is an artist, collector, and the Ken Dewey Director of Franklin Furnace Archive. His book Keep the Change: A Collector’s Tales of Lucky Pennies, Counterfeit C-Notes, and Other Curious Currency (Princeton Architectural Press, 2015) was selected by the New York Times as one of the top ten art books of the year. Spiller’s collections have been exhibited internationally including at apexart (New York), the New York State Museum (Albany), the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, DC), and Museo de Bellas Artes (Caracas).

In this much-anticipated-one-person show, Everything in New York Goes BANG!, Galinsky recounts his journey from childhood in the suburbs of Connecticut, through his interactions with hipsters in the Lower East Side of New York City, to his work with young people incarcerated on Rikers Island Jail. Expertly embodying multiple characters through storytelling and rock-star level poetry, he explores the harmony and turmoil of living in New York City from his arrival in the late 1980’s to his exile and banishment from the notorious Rikers Island Jail in 2022. Everything in New York Goes BANG! is executive produced by 5 Time TONY Award winning producer Terry Schnuck. The running time is 60 mins.

Nancy Azara is a sculptor who works in wood and whose scroll rubbings and tracings are collaged on mylar and paper.
