Today I got this thrilling email, which left me as verklempt as a shiksa can get:
“On behalf of the Academic Women’s Caucus and CEW+, I am pleased to congratulate you as a recipient of the 2023-2024 Sarah Goddard Power Award for your contributions to feminist and queer performance. You have been a leader in the space for decades, ensuring those who followed behind were mentored, challenged, and supported on their journeys.”
I’m thrilled at this award and humbled. Whatever I good I have been able to do in this world, either artistically or politically, has been because of the support and of feminists, mostly queer and queer people, mostly women and trans folks.
I don’t feel like I’ve earned the title “leader” when I compare myself to some I look up to from my own circles, like the late Robbie McCauley, Minnie Bruce Pratt or the dynamic duo of Lois Weaver and Peggy Shaw, Ramon Rivera Severa, David Roman, Jill Dolan, Clare Croft, Carmelita Tropicana, Anita Gonzalez, Tim Miller and all the people at WOW and before at the Heresies Collective. There’s also the many people I know only from their books or plays or art work. But it’s my pleasure and mission to try to lead and to help support others, particularly those whose creative expression shines with queer/feminist fervor.
I am deeply grateful to my friend and colleague Heidi Kumao who nominated me for this award and to anyone who had to write a letter of rec. There’s so much work that goes into these things. But particularly to Heidi who deserves a MacArthur for her art work and is the best colleague.

Aviva Rahmani has received a 2024 Theater Commission from the New York State Council on the Arts. Production of the Blued Trees opera will be made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. The preview of Blued Trees premiered August 26 at the Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn with composer Julia Schwartz, Librettist Catherine Filloux and projectionists Lauren Petty and Shaun Irons. Performers were pianist Joseph Vaz, soprano Lianne P. Coble-Dispensa, baritone Ross Bonoliel, and mezzo Catherine Choi-Steckmeyer.

Richard H. Alpert is one of 54 selected artists worldwide featured in the newest print edition of Al-Tiba 9 Magazine. Issue14 is curated as a “space where individual artists and designers can express their vision.” This issue includes works from Alpert’s Primary Traces series.
The Primary Traces is a testament to curiosity, scientific inquiry, and empirical exploration. The series captures the essence of child-like playfulness while simultaneously reflecting on the world of science and its exacting investigative processes. Furthermore, the influence of Marcel Duchamp and John Cage introduces an element of chance and randomness into the artistic process. Humor serves as a counterpoint to the heavier themes, adding a sense of playfulness to the work and prompting contemplation of some aspects of American culture.

14. Frank Moore, FF Alumn, new publication
new book, What A Life: The (auto)Biography of Shaman/Performance Artist Frank Moore
Over the years, Frank Moore had attempted to find someone to write his biography but it never worked out. In 2010, he decided to start working on it himself.
This book is the working document Frank created that he was working on, when he had time, up until his death in 2013. It covers his life up until around 1989.
Frank constructed it primarily from the conversations he had with anthropologist Russell Shuttleworth from 1997 through 2009. The complete transcripts of those interviews are available in the book How to Handle an Anthropologist published in 2019 by Inter-Relations. He also used excerpts from his mother, Constance (Connie) Moore’s autobiography, excerpts from his own writing, in particular from Art of a Shaman, and an interview by Sheri Falco for a film, “Sex and Spirituality,” that never was made.
No attempt has been made to organize this material. It is presented in its raw form, as Frank left it, in the hope it will be valuable for future researchers interested in Moore’s life.
It also includes two galleries of photographs.

Join Darla Bjork and Nancy Azara at Carter Burden Gallery’s seventh annual exhibition The Small Works Show. The show features “over seventy gallery artists who have harnessed their creativity on uniform 10” x 10” canvases, resulting in an array of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and collages that eloquently demonstrate the remarkable diversity and artistic strength of the artists’ talent.”
In accordance with the guiding principle of Carter Burden Gallery, which advocates for art accessibility to all, every artwork is affordably priced at $200, ensuring accessibility for both seasoned collectors and those new to art collecting. The exhibition will showcase Art Cards measuring 6″ x 6″, and each is priced at $20, with all proceeds directed towards supporting Carter Burden Gallery.
