A Sourcebook of Performance Labor: Book Launch with Author Joey Orr and Discussion with Dread Scott, Rudy Gerson, and Kyle Carrero Lopez

RSVP through this link: https://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/eventReg?oeidk=a07ejqt39sja120b18b&oseq=&c=&ch=

This public discussion centers on the recent publication of A Sourcebook of Performance Labor (Routledge 2023) by curator Joey Orr, which reorients well-known works of contemporary performance and social practice around the workers who have shaped, enacted, and supported them. Emerging from perspectives on maintenance, care, and affective labor, Sourcebook is filled with the voices of collaborators in notable works attributed to established contemporary artists including Francis Alÿs, Tania Bruguera, Suzanne Lacy, Ernesto Pujol, Asad Raza, Dread Scott, and Tino Sehgal. This research aims to add perspectives to the ways we understand these works and their contexts, exploring the category of performance labor through the experiences of participants who helped craft this body of work. In a discussion on the ethics of participation, Joey Orr will be joined by Dread Scott, Rudy Gerson, and Kyle Carrero Lopez. Event details can be found here: https://www.the8thfloor.org/upcoming-events/sourcebook

5. Asia Stewart, FF Alumn, at A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn, opening April 22, and more

I’m writing to invite you to the opening of my solo exhibition dreamgurl at A.I.R. Gallery on Saturday, April 22nd from 6pm – 8pm.

dreamgurl

A.I.R. Gallery

155 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

April 22nd – May 21st

dreamgurl showcases a series of photographic self-portraits. After a video of my 2020 performance “La Négresse blanche” was shared on various pornographic sites without my consent, I processed this violation by exploring the possibility of being a producer of pornographic images.

This is a special exhibition for me; dreamgurl is my first solo show, and it marks the culmination of projects that I have been developing during my fellowship at A.I.R. Gallery over the past six months. I will be activating this exhibition with durational performances in the gallery on Saturday, April 29th and Sunday, April 30th from 2pm – 6pm. You can sign up to attend those performances here.

If you cannot make it to the opening or performances, I am more than happy to walk you through the exhibition one-on-one. I’ll be at the gallery on:

Friday, April 28th, 10am – 6pm

Friday, May 12th, 10am – 6pm

Friday, May 19th, 10am – 6pm

Thank you so much for all of your support this year! I hope to see you in the coming weeks.

With care,

Asia Stewart

“In this one-of-a-kind exhibition, The ArQuives opens their doors for the public to experience their recently created Trans Collections. Curated by Tobaron Waxman, this exhibition explores some histories of trans resilience in Toronto from the 1950s to the 1990s. Curator Tobaron Waxman offers a unique lens on some of Toronto’s trans community histories, focusing on the fight for access to trans aware health care, language, imagery, and mutual aid. The ArQuives Trans Collections have been collecting memories, art and documents to share histories of community, activism, and trans triumphs under extreme circumstances.

Round-table discussion:

Myseum of Toronto + The ArQuives Present:

A Roundtable on Trans Histories and Activism in Toronto, 1950s – 90s

Date: April 19

Time: 7pm EST

More info and registration here: https://arquives.ca/program/a-roundtable-on-trans-activism

Myseum of Toronto and The ArQuives invite you to join us for a roundtable discussion on trans activism in Toronto between the 1960s and 1990s. In this rare opportunity, speakers Monica Forrester, Mirha Soleil Ross, and Rupert Raj will reflect on some of their foundational actions that helped create kinship and activist culture for the rights of trans people. This intergenerational roundtable will explore the implications and impact of communities whose members self-determined their own definitions of sustainability and health, as their own advocates in the face of violence, oppression, and adversity. With exhibition curator Tobaron Waxman, and moderator Sly Sarkisova.”

Monica Forrester is a Two-Spirit trans woman, a community activist, a sex worker, and an important piece of Toronto’s LGBTQ2+ history. Monica has an ongoing and intensive life of advocacy work in Toronto. She is the Executive Director and founder of Trans Pride Toronto. She formerly worked at the 519, where she contributed to Trans Programming and was the outreach worker for the Trans Sex Worker Outreach Programme. She is currently the program coordinator of the Aboriginal Sex Workers Education and Outreach Project at Maggie’s: The Toronto Sex Workers Action Project.

Rupert Raj is transgender activist, trans social author, and former psychotherapist. Raj is a transgender pioneer who dedicated his career to clinical research, counselling and advocacy for the transgender community for over 50 years. Raj established (and co-established) some of Canada’s earliest trans advocacy organizations, including the Foundation for the Advancement of Canadian Transsexuals (disbanded). Raj also established the first national transsexual newsletter in Canada, Gender Review: A FACTual Journal.

Mirha-Soleil Ross is a transexual videographer, performance artist, sex worker, and activist. Since the early 1990s, her work has focused on transsexual rights, access to resources, advocacy for sex workers, and animal rights in Montreal and Toronto.

Sly Sarkisova is a Psychotherapist, Consultant, and Clinical Supervisor specializing in trauma informed therapy, mental health and addiction recovery.

Tobaron Waxman is an interdisciplinary artist who sings.Tobaron’s projects interrogate how borders and notions of citizenship make moral and ethical claims on our bodies. Tobaron’s works have been exhibited and published internationally; grappling with issues of border and embodiment, such as migrancy and houselessness, nation and the state, and gender and racial passing. Fellowships and awards have included generous support from Franklin Furnace, Canada Council, Kulturlabor ICI Berlin, Akademie der Künst der Welt/Köln, New Museum NYC, invited participant of the first Master Class for Trans Voice at Opera Berlin, and the inaugural Audience Award of Jewish Museum NY for the 8-hour endurance performance Opshernish, accessed by Leslie Lohman LGBT Museum in 2022.  In 2013, Tobaron founded The Intergenerational LGBT Artist Residency, as a combined curatorial, relational/live art, and sociopolitical praxis.
