Prior to a two week run at the renowned PS 122 in New York, surrealist/political satirist/puppeteer Paul Zaloom previews his newest (and 11th) solo puppet extravaganza, MIGHTY NICE, a work in three parts: “THE PUNCH AND JIMMY SHOW”, a gay update of the classic “Punch and Judy”; “DON’T”, a mock D.A.R.E anti-drug presentation hosted by an intense state cop and his drug addled, life-sized dummy, Billy; and “2222”, a frenetic, apocalyptic, and hysterical sci-fi vision of what the world will be like in the year 2222. On Saturday, January 11, 2003 from noon until midnight, Art in General will hold its 5th Annual Video Marathon. This 12-hour screening features a variety of programs including: From History to Memory: -Some Views from the Video Zone curated by Sergio Edelstzein, Tel Aviv; Re-envisioning Dissent, a program of video works envisioning politics in visual culture; Selections from Transmediale Int’l Media Art Festival, Berlin; MONOCANAL: Selections of New Spanish Video Art, 1996-2001 from Reina Sofia, Madrid; Dinner/performance: a roving formal garden of food presented in a performance by Paco Rodriguez; two programs of emerging video artists’ work curated from general submissions; and live video/audio mixing from square.square with dj Sara Walker.

Babs Reingold Debuts “La Longue Duree (A long Moment)” Installation At Savannah College of Art and Design, Pinnacle Gallery. New York and Tybee Island artist Babs Reingold will show a new installation, titled “La Longue Duree (A long Moment)” at The Pinnacle Gallery January 18-March 6, 2003.
Opening reception is 6-8pm Saturday, January 18. Pinnacle Gallery is at 320 E Liberty Street, Savannah, Georgia.
The installation exists in a semi-darkened room. Bare bulbs go on-and-off in the interior of five cocoon-like enclosures, three feet in diameter, and hanging floor-to-ceiling. Within the cocoons, fabricated with stained silk organza, are paper pieces which are revealed when the light bulbs go on. The paper works, translucent in the light, are also stained, “La Longue Duree” captures Reingold’s ongoing theme of revealing the hidden, while paradoxically only exposing fragments of what is hiding. In her statement, Reingold explains, “What is life but a long moment, our vital selves only protected by flimsy covering, often pierced, often transparent, yet enduring, and even though scarred and marked by time, still beautiful. Beneath the covering are layers, truths mostly hidden, yet revealed now and then, epiphanies coming in glimmers of light, only to fade and be replaced with new illuminations before all is dark.” After viewing a Reingold painting exhibition earlier this year at The Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia, an art critic wrote: “The works evoke such physical associations as scratching, cutting, scarring, paring, bleeding, burning and brands. Emotions run the gamut…”
Reingold sees her works and installations as “other skins.” This is a reference not only to human skin, she said, but to the topography of life in all objects. Reingold uses oils, a staining process of rust and tea, and materials such as silk, threads, human hair, encaustic. Tools and other found objects find their way into her work, as well.
The “La Longue Duree” installation continues a theme Reingold has been exploring for the past eight years, that of surface, and the biography beneath the surface. “Layers, and the chimera of layers, are integral in all surfaces — ours, a structure, whatever — for illusion is always the life beneath the surface.” Tommy Lanigan-Schmidt, the curator for the Contemporary Annual at the National Arts Clubs, New York City, where Reingold¹s works were selected, said her installation “got me thinking about the skin I¹m in. It was somewhat creepy.” In another show, the art critic for New Jersey¹s Newark Star Ledger noted Reingold’s “strange and haunting little boxes… shrink the sacred down to human scale and suggest a loss…” A new series of boxes are slated for a show in the Jersey City Mseum in 2003. Reingold maintains studios in the New York City area and in Tybee Island, Georgia. A frequent exhibitor in the New York area, she was selected for a New Jersey Arts Annual Exhibit where a work was selected for the permanent collection of the Newark Museum. She additionally co-curated a show at Manhattan¹s Franklin Furnace that motivated a religious coalition to picket on the steps of the White House. Reingold has won numerous awards, including two awards from Whitney curator Barbara Haskell. Before coming to New York City in early 1990¹s she completed her MFA at SUNY-Buffalo. In Buffalo, she had a solo show at Hallwalls, and exhibited at the Albright-Knox Museum of Art. During this period she also was an instructor of art at SUNY-Buffalo, Buffalo State College, and Villa Maria College. Her 5-year undergraduate BFA degree is from the Cleveland Institute of Art.
