Mouchette’s website censored by copyright
The French Society of Authors’ Rights (SACD) following a request from Robert Bresson’s widow, has forbidden Mouchette of the site http://mouchette.org to show one of her works related to the film called “Mouchette” created by Robert Bresson in 1967. The forbidden work is a quiz comparing both characters, the girl from the film and the girl from the website. Here is the letter that forbids the film quiz: http://mouchette.org/film/sacd.html
This interdiction unfortunately censors a work which is an homage celebrating the source of its inspiration. The narrow-mindedness of the heir of the copyright is the only cause for this interdiction. As a protest, several websites are presenting copies of this quiz which is no longer allowed to be shown on mouchette.org.

NEW HOTELS FOR GLOBAL NOMADS
“New Hotels for Global Nomads,” a new exhibition at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, demonstrates that hotels today advance how people live in cities, travel around the world, conduct business, commune with nature and even construct their fantasy lives. The modern hotel not only offers a place to sleep, but also provides its guests with an escapist experience, through its design, sense of spectacle and amenities. The modern hotel also furnishes many of its guests with a fully functional “office-away-from-the-office,” vital in today’s fast-moving business climate. “New Hotels for Global Nomads” combines architecture, interior design, photography, film and works of art to show just how varied and dynamic hotels can be today. Among the new generation of hotels explored in the show are The Hotel in Lucerne, which re-creates movie scenes on its guestroom ceilings to express the hotel as cinematic experience; The Venetian in Las Vegas, an outstanding example of t he gambling capital’s new generation of scenographic hotels; the luxurious, sail-shaped Burj al-Arab in Dubai, the tallest hotel in the world, with many of its interior surfaces sheathed in gilt. Encompassing two full floors of Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, the exhibition highlights more than 35 real and conceptual examples of modern hotels and their services, as well as materials on legendary historic hotels. The exhibition is organized into five themes-Urban Hotels, Hotels as Global Business, Hotels on the Move, Natural Hotels, and Fantasy Hotels-taken from the historic evolution of hotels. The contemporary projects in the exhibition reinterpret and reinvent these historic themes to forecast directions for the development of hotels in the 21st century.

Sonya Rapoport, FF Alumn, is participating in the Second International Art Biennial-Buenos Aires to be held from November 7th to December 8th, 2002. a collaboration between the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and Palermo University.
Rapoport is exhibiting her web project,”Redeeming the Gene, Molding the Golem, Folding the Protein,” (www.sonyarapoport.net) and related printed wall panels. She will give a lecture about her work at the Journées de la Critique (Criticism Meetings).
“Redeeming the Gene, Molding the Golem, Folding the Protein,” is a mythic parody designed for web viewing. The work challenges current genetic engineering techniques with the creation of an artificial anthropoid, the golem, brought to life according to the ancient Hebrew ritual of kabbalah. Lilith and Eve, by using DNA sequences derived from an ancient cloning vector strategy, create a moral kabbalah gene in response to Eduardo Kac’s artists gene in his “Genesis” installation. After being a much maligned source of female evil for thousands of years, Lilith and Eve reinvent themselves as they mold a golem that incorporates the kabbalah gene. The golem in “Redeeming the Gene, Molding the Golem, Folding the Protein,” is a contemporary robot whose alter-ego is the protein molecule that folds into impeccable moral fortitude.

8. Paul Henry Ramirez, FF Alumn, at Tang Teaching Museum, Skidmore College.
I thought I would like to update you with some information about an upcoming show of Paul Henry Ramirez’s at the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College at Saratoga Springs, NY. Mr. Ramirez will be presenting his fourth version of “Elevatious Transendsualistic,” an exhibition of 14 + paintings that are installed in wall murals that have been informed by the architectural features of the exhibition space. In this instance the Tang has commissioned a dance piece that will be a direct response to Ramirez work. The installation at the Tang will be on view from November 2, 2002 through January 2, 2003. “Elevatious Transendsualistic” was previously viewed at The Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, Caren Golden Fine Art in New York City and DiverseWorks in Houston, TX. interaXis is an investigation into the possibilities of improvisation, form, and presentation in multi-site, network-based performance. The live performers, musician/web artists will be performing with one another, simultaneously, in New York and Los Angeles. Performers in both locations will be connected via an internet streaming communications link, allowing for exchange of sounds, video imagery that the musicians read as a score, and spatialization data, all in real-time. In each space, the sounds heard by the audience will be a mix of live improvisations performed by the musicians in the space, together with the contributions of the remote performers. An internet audience will be able to tune in live to either stream and experience the project from afar. The project will make use of sound spatialization techniques to create a dynamic audio environment that activates the two performance spaces and engages the audiences in a unique listening experience.
