New York choreographer/performance/video artist Charles Dennis brings his innovative approach to combining media and performance to Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, California, Thursday through Saturday October 17-19 at 8 pm, in a program that features his two most recent solo works, Mr. Remote (1998) and The Gift (2002). Both works deal with how an individual tries to find humanity and intimacy in a digital environment and combine performance with live, wireless video. A Day at Wave Hill
All of the art on view in “Landscape” began with an invitation from the gallery. On a sunny Saturday, September 7, 2002, the respondents–painters, photographers, poets, architects and designers–converged in a verdant summer landscape and produced works creatively related to that particular time and place.
The diversity of the art on display reflects the artists’ point of view and the conditions of the day: the light, the weather, chance interactions, the setting, time constraints, whatever the day presented. The site itself permitted various readings: formal, organic, historic, chaotic and personal.
The project takes a contemporary conceptual approach to plein air painting, a French movement that began in the 19th century in contrast to the studio-bound academic work dominating the era. Plein air painting was concerned with capturing a sense of nature through fleeting moments of changing light and atmosphere. Artists often painted the same landscape together and the genre has sociable, democratic connotations.
The setting of Wave Hill, an estate overlooking the majestic Palisades, was chosen for its 19th century architecture as well as its beautiful gardens. The 28 acre site, now operated as a non-profit cultural institution, is situated near the beginning of an upstream journey where one discovers the territory that inspired the Hudson River School of landscape painting. This movement called for a renewal of the hopes embodied in the Edenic American landscape.
It should be remembered that “the Beautiful”, a 19th century value, is embodied in the very design of the Wave Hill site. The participants immersed themselves in it. The exhibition expresses the innumerable ways in which nature’s fullness and energy can be interpreted. Beauty plays a powerful role in the rejuvenating, communal activity that inspired this exhibition.

Alice in Wonderland meets David Lynch! Psychologically-repressed, Mid-westerner Katrina’s spiritual journey takes her to a magical East Coast seaside town where she confronts her demons, her father, and her sub-conscious-literally in an abandoned, reclaimed backyard septic tank. Katrina’s (Blythe Frank) new business of installing and programming video screens in public and private bathrooms utilizes found clips from Mary Tyler Moore Aerobic Workout video to Bass Fishing in Texas. New Age crossdresser Lady McBee (David Hanbury) is Katrina’s mentor as the entrepreneur descends into her subterranium apartment and is ultimately transformed by the world of color (Katrina is color blind except when she watches TV!). George, her ex-high school guidance counselor and business partner is continuously heard only via cellphone from their New Jersey headquarters. Ramone (Ricardo Rodriguez), the indomitable Latin Lover, Katrina’s plumber and choreographer, sparks romance that vibrates from the magic of septic sex to Texas! A must pee!
Providence Dirt Newsreel-Purchased by Love.

The black and white, voice over newsreel format from the 1930s to the 1950s is utilized to create a series of fictional news stories set in Rhode Island. The introduction presents a collage of images of Renaissance City, followed by the sacerdotal Roger Williams, and a scroll of his infamous words at the signing of the Land Treaty with the Native Americans in 1638: ” Not a penny was demanded by either. It was not price nor money that could have purchased Rhode Island. Rhode Island was purchased by love.”
Utilizing the nostalgic black & white format from a time when viewers believed they were seeing the facts, the fictionalized news stories of Providence Dirt question the validity of “objective” news at a time when technology and commercial interests often distort and manipulate the truth.

Dr. Beverly Adams, Curator of the Diane and Bruce Halle Collection of twentieth-century Latin American art, will discuss this seminal work by a performance artist whose influence continues.
The series began as self-portraits in which Cuban-born artist Ana Mendieta literally inscribed her presence onto the landscape. Built in mud, rocks and earth, assembled with leaves moss or flowers, etched in fire or ash, the inscriptions of the artist’s form were documented in photographs and on film.
The Silueta Series from the Halle Collection will be on display at the ASU Art Museum from September 21 – October 23.

Ricardo Miranda Zuñiga will be presenting his mobile public art project, Vagamundo at the conference and exhibition Race In Digital Space.
