Notes on Belonging to Boundaries is an immersive participatory performance work in four acts. It is a declaration to live unbound by social constructions, self-doubt, and fear. Acknowledge our in progress destabilization and revel in it. Through this process we can gain agency and autonomy without having to suppress the actualizations of the other.

Destroyer of Naivetés: COMPUTER VIRUS 1.0 is a revisitation to Joseph Nechvatal’s HyperCard Computer Virus Project work from 1992-93 that dealt with the AIDS virus epidemic placed in conjunction with a growing concern for computer viruses. In 1916, things were brewing across the Atlantic between Provincetown and Dublin. This experimental one-act play, with musical numbers, is a Centennial mash-up between Pulitzer/Nobel Laureate playwright Eugene O’Neill and leader/poet of the Irish Easter Rebellion, Padraig Pearse. The Provincetown Players, formed in 1915, radicalized modern American theater. Players included Louise Bryant, Jack Reed, Susan Glaspell, Carm Cook and others.
Set on the ship, S.S. Glencairn, it is adapted from O’Neill’s 1916 Provincetown debut play, Bound East for Cardiff. Musical numbers, with creative lyrics, include: Cape Cod Bay (formerly Galway Bay); Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral; and It’s the Same Old Shillelagh.

De boemerang als een swingende metafoor voor de relaties tussen kunst, kunstenaar en kunstbelever. Is het de kunstenaar die met zijn werk een boemerang naar de toeschouwer werpt? Gooit het kunstwerk – eenmaal geworden en geworpen – zijn brutale bestaan in het gezicht van de maker? Slingert de beschouwer zijn of haar vragen naar het kunstobject? Of is het dit allemaal – en veel meer? Een universum van acties en reacties: verwarrend, waanzinnig, verlichtend, kippenvellerig en irritant, nihilistisch en allesomvattend, doodstil en oorverdovend? Feit is dat de curatoren zichzelf afvroegen of, en zo ja, met welke vraag ze na acht zomerexpo’s in Kasteel Oud-Rekem zouden terugkeren. Zo slaat de titel daarmee evenzeer op de totale tentoonstelling, als op de kunstenaars en op de mogelijkheid van kunst in onze tijd. En op de bezoeker die voortdurend op zijn hoede mag zijn. Ontwijken of openstaan, raken of geraakt worden, dat is hier de vraag. Samen met ontelbare “andere vragen” die als boemerangs door de ruimtes suizen. Govert Derix

La MaMa Announces an Eclectic and International 55th Season

For its 55th season, La MaMa, the East Village hub of avant-garde performance, has assembled a cosmopolitan smorgasbord of more than 70 productions of plays, puppet shows and dance.
Among the highlights for the season, which runs from September through May, is a revival of Stephen Adly Guirgis’s play “The Last Days of Judas Iscariot” (March 9-26), directed by the Tony-nominated actress Estelle Parsons. The play had its premiere in 2005 at the Public Theater, in a production directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman and with a cast that included Sam Rockwell and Eric Bogosian. In the staging directed by Ms. Parsons, the cast will be members of the Actors Studio, which celebrates its 70th anniversary next year.
This summer, the 88-year-old Ms. Parsons starred in the Israel Horovitz comedy “Out of the Mouths of Babes” at the Cherry Lane Theater, but the play’s run Off Broadway was cut short because of concerns over her health. As it happens, Mr. Horovitz’s next project, “Man in Snow,” will be presented at La MaMa Nov. 10 through 27, after its premiere at the Gloucester Stage Company in Massachusetts in September.
The series “AdA: Author Directing Author” returns in January, once again featuring the playwrights Neil LaBute and Marco Calvani. For this third edition, in which the plays will revolve around themes of power, they will be joined by the Spanish writer Marta Buchaca.
Other festivals for the coming season include the La MaMa Puppet Series (Sept. 24 through Nov. 6), with an international lineup that includes the Obie Award winner Randolph Curtis Rand’s “Phantasmagoria: or, Let Us Seek Death,” based on Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.” La MaMa Moves!, the theater’s annual dance festival, will return in spring 2017.
La MaMa will also stage remixes of classic theater works throughout the season, including the Colombian troupe Vueltas Bravas’s production of August Strindberg’s “Miss Julie” (Feb. 2-19); Seon Jae Kim’s punk rock take on Sophocles’ “Antigone,” “Riot Antigone” (Feb. 10-19); and the Norwegian company Grusomhetens Teater’s “Fjeldfuglen” (March 2-5), an opera with a libretto by Ibsen.

Hector Canonge completed the production and presentation of ARTerial PERFORMANCE LAB, APLAB, his independent transcontinental initiative for performance artists in the Americas. The project took place in various Latin American cities with the participation of more than 15 artists, the collaboration of local institutions, artists collectives, and the support from universities. APLAB also presented a special program with performances, workshops, and talks in the X Encuentro of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics in Santiago, Chile.
Continuing his work, Canonge will visit Bolivia for the inauguration is his photographic exhibition “TROLOPOGIAS” at Arte 21 SCZ (August 11 – 23), will present the new performance project “ALTERIDADES” at Centro de la Cultural Plurinacional in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra (August 12), and the ongoing performance “TRAUM(A)” at the art center Proyecto Martadero (August 16 – 20). The artist will return to the United States to continue work at his MODULO 715 in late August.

Brief Biography:
Hector Canonge is an interdisciplinary artist, curator and cultural entrepreneur based in New York City. His work incorporates the use of new media technologies, cinematic narratives, performance, and socially engaged art to explore and treat issues related to constructions of identity, gender roles, psychogeography, and the politics of migration. Challenging the white box settings of a gallery or a museum, or intervening directly in public spaces, his performances mediate movement, endurance, and ritualistic processes. Some of his actions and carefully choreographed performances involve collaborating with other artists and interacting with audiences. His installations, interactive platforms, and performance art work have been exhibited and presented in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
As cultural entrepreneur, Canonge created, and organizes independently the annual Contemporary Performance Art Festival NYC, ITINERANT. He started projects such as ARTerial PERFORMANCE LAB (APLAB), a transcontinental initiative to foster collaboration among performance artists from the Americas, PERFORMEANDO, a program that focuses on featuring Hispanic performance artists living in the USA and Europe, NEXUSURNEXUS a virtual platform for Live Action Art, and PERFORMAXIS, an international residency program in collaboration with galleries and art spaces in Latin America. Canonge co-founded QMAD, Queens Media Arts Development, a non-profit arts organization in Queens, NYC, and as curator, he has organized exhibitions at Centro Cultural Santa Cruz, Queens Museum, Space 37 Gallery, and Visual AIDS. He created programs such as the monthly artist dialog series A-LAB Forum at Crossing Art Gallery, and the monthly independent LGBT film series CINEMAROSA. Canonge’s work has been reviewed by The New York Times, ART FORUM, Art in America, New York Daily News, Manhattan Times, Hispanic Magazine; by major networks ABC, NBC, CNN, CBS, UNIVISION, etc., and online by Art Experience NYC, Hyperallergic, Turbulence, Art Card Review, and New York Foundation for the Arts’ bulletin NYFA News.
Canonge teaches Media Arts and Technology at City University of New York, and directs projects, programs and initiatives from MODULO 715 his new studio in Jackson Heights, Queens. He hosts CONVIVIR, the international residency program for co-habitation and collaboration. After living abroad for almost 3 years, the artist came back to NYC in late 2015, launched TALKaCTIVE: Performance Art Conversation Series, and the new Performance Art initiative LiVEART.US hosted at the Queens Museum and at other local public institutions.
