If change is the only constant—as the Fluxus artists attested—Franklin Furnace has remained constant since its inception in 1976. Now Franklin Furnace is announcing another major change: On July 24, 2019, the Board of Directors of Franklin Furnace established the Ken Dewey Directorship, appointed Harley Spiller as the first Ken Dewey Director, and Martha Wilson became Founding Director Emerita and will remain actively involved. Together, we welcome you to join Franklin Furnace’s
TWO HATS MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN 2019-20.
The Franklin Furnace directorship is now named in honor of Ken Dewey, who wore two hats and could talk equally comfortably with crazy artists and “suits” (business people). Like Harley Spiller and Martha Wilson, Ken Dewey was both an artist and an administrator: in the early 1970s, he became Project Development Director at the New York State Council on the Arts. This is rare; few art spaces in New York are run by a person who wears two hats. To assume the post, future Ken Dewey Directors will also be required to be both artists and administrators.
