Back to THE HISTORY OF THE FUTUREFall 1999/ Winter 2000

Friday, December 10, 1999, Art and Madness:
Linda Sibio, "West Virginia Schizophrenic Blues"; Paul McMahon, "Rock and Roll Therapist."

I believe all artists do their work to keep from going nuts. Some are just more up front about the connection between art and madness; plus performance art is a flexible artform which lets them do anything to express what is inside. Linda Sibio's performance was five hours in length and she played all the parts, her mother, her father, and herself. When her father threatened her repeatedly with a knife it made you understand why madness might be an option. At one point she really vomited on stage. There was an intermission 2-1/2 hours in and half the audience left. But the other half stayed, perhaps to get a fix on the madness they felt in themselves.
