THE HISTORY OF THE FUTURE
Friday, October 22, 1999 Endurance:
Papo Colo, "Superman"; Nigel Rolfe, "Rope"; David Leslie, "Impact Addict"; Matt Mullican, hypnosis tapes.
Testing the limits of the body has become a major concern of performance artists in the last quarter of this century; from Marina Abramovic's performance lying in a burning Communist star--which nearly asphyxiated her, but sent her on her quest; to Chris Burden having himself famously shot; to Stelarc hanging over 8th street, suspended on hooks through his skin. Endurance works are inherently personal, often putting life and limb at risk; and just as often are political indictments as well, the body of the artist standing in for the "body politic." Perhaps it is this tension that makes endurance works powerful emblems of life at the end of the millennium.
