THE HISTORY OF THE FUTURE

Friday, January 28, 2000, Art/Life:
Linda Montano, "Mitchell's Death"; Annie Lanzillotto, "How to Cook a Heart."

Is it art or is it life? Only the artist knows for sure. I spoke to Tehching Hsieh and Linda Montano after the year they were tied together by an eight-foot length of rope. (When it was cut they shook hands, hugged each other, then slugged each other.) Someone used the metaphor of the window: they were looking through the same pane of glass but from opposite sides. Were they doing life as art or art as life? Linda maintains life is the substance of art. Tehching says, "Go in life, art will follow life. Doing art, life will follow art." No wonder they slugged each other.
