Weekly Spotlight: Marty Pottenger, FF Alumn, now online at https://vimeo.com/493591242

In “What It’s Like To Be a Man,” a 57-minute solo performance presented at the original Franklin Furnace in November, 1987, Marty Pottenger presents portraits of men’s experiences as men. In creating the performance, Pottenger met individually with 60 men and boys from all walks of life asking each questions including:

What’s a treasured memory of a time you spent with your father?
What’s something that’s great about being a man?
What’s something that’s hard about being a man?
What’s your earliest memory connected to sex in any way at all?
Does that memory have any connection to your life now?
What’s one thing you love about other men?
What’s one thing you can’t stand about other men?

Pottenger paints what is at times a hysterical—pun intended—at times heart wrenching picture of what it means to be a man through her lens as a woman. Story ‘ ellers' include Bill Shakespeare and Richard Nixon along with a love song to mass murderer, Richard Speck. Her performance, which includes 'Rodeo Penis Salesman’ and ’Slowly I Turn’ alternates between seriousness, humor and empathy, “What It’s Like To Be a Man” explores the triumphs and tragedies of manhood. 5. Jacob Burckhardt, FF Alumn, now online at vimeo.com

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Since I haven’t had a public movie screening in quite a while, and at this rate it looks like there won’t be another one in the near future, I would like to invite you to watch some movies of mine in the comfort of your own homes.

All the short movies listed below have Vimeo links underneath them, which you can click on or copy and paste into your browser. You can watch any of them, all of them, in any order, at any time. If you can, please listen with headphones rather than computer speakers.
The whole program adds up to about 88 minutes.

When the movies are over and the lights have come up I would like to invite you to meet in the lobby and have drinks and snacks (you have to furnish them yourselves, I’m afraid) and talk about them. I will set up a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, December 29, at 3:00PM (EST, East Coast time) and send you the Zoom Link that day.

Feel free to pass this on.

See you next week, I hope, and be careful and safe for the holidays!

All the best,

Jacob

8. Cassils, FF Alumn, winter news

Virtually everyone agrees that 2020 was an abomination. Against crumbling infrastructure, urgent uprisings, a dangerous sociopath in the white house and a global pandemic I worked with my friend and comrade rafa esparza, my producer / nurse wife Cristy Michel and a incredible cohort of 80+artists and activists to manifest In Plain Sight, a public artwork exposing hidden immigrant prisons in a time of COVID. Manifesting this vision (which garnered 3.4 billion engagements and raised thousands of dollars in immigrant bail funds) while working alongside an intentionally intersectional and incredible team, has been the artistic/ friendship/ career and spiritual highlight of my life - let alone 2020. IPS worked with Kyle Stephan and Paulina Lara to create programming for MOCA and Occidental College. I co taught at Syracuse University and programmed their Visiting Artist Lecture Series alongside Jess Posner. We collaborated with over 20 grass roots immigrant justice organizations. We built bonds and networks of incredible talent and we took the sky as our canvas in a moment when that seemed impossible. This experience taught me that with so much loss there is also room to grow. Let's continue to work together to put forward the art and the world we want to see: building with passion, compassion and care. I appreciate you all. Thank you for your support always. I send you all much love, care and solidarity to you and your loved ones in these unprecedented times.

Dear Friends!

As we come to the end of a difficult year, I hope you find new energy and renewed optimism as we move forward to 2021. Despite the challenges, I hope there were also moments of rest and care throughout this year to look back on now. I, myself, am grateful to have some opportunities to share with you as we close out the year, and I hope these will give you a little boost of positivity too!

Earlier this month, I debuted a new collaboration with the New York Choral Society, where I made a short film scored to Adolphus Hailstork's song "A Carol for All Children" a work with a powerfully simple message that every child—every person—is valuable and deserving. In collaboration with dancer Paige Fraser and filmmaker Domenic Del Carmine we've produced a visual piece that I hope bolsters this message. The film is now visible on the NY Choral Society's youtube page, to view click here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ui6O78swtJI&feature=youtu.be

Also, I am delighted that my work was recently acquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and by The Royal Bank of Canada. I am always thrilled to have my works join these collections and legacies.

As we close this year, I hope we can share in a sense of solidarity—in our hopes for the coming year, and in the approaching possibility of being able to dance and gather again.

Happy holidays! Be safe and well! Joy is on the way!

Best, Brendan
