ARENA@Suite 806 is pleased to present Wrap Around 4, curated by Renée Riccardo featuring the photographic work of Megan Cump, Liz Nielsen and LoVid. The location, Suite 806 at 89 Fifth Avenue (near 16th St.) in Manhattan is the office of Lee Shapiro, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist. There will be an opening to the public on Saturday, May 3rd from 2 - 5 p.m. and after that the show can be viewed by appointment through the end of August, 2014.

ARENA@Suite 806 is a unique venture between Renée Riccardo and her therapist, Lee Shapiro, Psy.D. This exhibition is the fourth in a series of exhibitions that began in the Spring of 2013 that change every three months. Although the space is open to the public by appointment the aim is to create a stimulating, healing environment for the patients that visit and a new way to experience contemporary art firsthand. The pieces in the exhibition were carefully chosen to work off of one another regarding the colors, content and nuances that exist in each artist's work. These art works are placed in this particular setting to assist in creating a space to inspire all who enter.

Megan Cump is presenting two photographs from her series, Black Moon, which draws from folktales, spirit photography, epic poems, and the alchemy of analog photography. For her, the dark is itself a wilderness of sorts, full of the promise of the unknown. Untitled (Perseids), was shot in the woods of the night sky during the Perseids meteor shower. In Cump's words, "It's two sequential frames from one negative strip printed as a seamless single image. Before processing this film I slightly opened the back of the camera introducing additional light which simultaneously destroyed and created anew the imagery on the negatives. Stars then appear to burn through the atmosphere and the evening sky fills with vivid light and color." Replete with auspicious meteor showers and a rare white deer, these photographs transport us, suggesting the other side of things.

Megan Cump has exhibited her photographs and videos internationally, curated a number of exhibitions, has been a recipient of a MacDowell Colony Residency Fellowship twice and most recently had a solo exhibition at Station Independent Projects in New York.

LoVid, the artist duo Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus, are known for their dynamic, colorful pieces which are a masterful mix of the high and low tech. Known for their innovative performances, live video installations, tactile objects, patchworks, sculptures, and installations, LoVid encourages the viewer to reexamine his/her relationship to the digital world. The images presented in Wrap Around 4 entitled, The Other Side of Ground were prints that were produced during a residency at The Institute for Electronic Arts (IEA) at Alfred University. The pieces were originally presented at Mixed Greens in Chelsea as part of a site-specific window project which faced W. 26th Street in Chelsea. The vivid colors and patterns are created with LoVid's handmade video synthesizer, recorded and recomposed into analog prints. The artists' visual work offers an intensely visceral experience, forming a blended landscape that incorporates complementary elements from media noise and abstract painting. They are ultimately interested in the ways in which the human body and mind observe, process, and respond to natural and technological environments, as well as how we preserve data, signals, and memory.

LoVid has performed and exhibited internationally, including: Smack Mellon, Netherlands Media Art Institute (Holland), International Film Festival Rotterdam, MoMA, The Kitchen, FACT (UK), Real Art Ways, Urbis (UK), The Jewish Museum, The Neuberger Museum, and the New Museum. LoVid has received numerous grants and awards among many from: NYSCA, NYFA, The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, and LMCC.

Liz Nielsen's unique photographic works draw from a number of different experiments and experiences. She is presenting the tryptich entitled, Welcome Home which is a blend of her work produced with colored gels and light, juxtaposed with images that she photographed on the street. The influence of Ellsworth Kelly and color field painters are inherent in her practice as are collage and varying urban landscapes. In her most recent body of work which she refers to as "compositions," Nielsen created unique chromogenic prints by cutting colored gels, placing them onto glass slides in various arrangements and then using that as the negative. She then enters the darkroom in blindness to experiment with time and exposure. Nielsen's presentations and inventions turn the outer world inward, making one world into two interchanging the subjective with the objective. She layers and intersects shapes, lines, and colors that are found in both created and pre-existing landscapes; each revealing connections that may otherwise go unnoticed. Inwardly, these images, places and spaces fall flat and locations become ambiguous. Time exists outside of the frame and representation meets abstraction.

Nielsen's works have been exhibited in group exhibitions, including David Zwirner, New York; Schalter, Berlin; and New Capital and LVL3, Chicago.

Renée Riccardo is an independent curator. She was an adjunct curator at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York from 1987 to 1988 and independently organized shows of postmodernist photography from 1985 through 1990, including the traveling exhibition Acceptable Entertainment for Independent Curators Inc. In 1991 she opened ARENA, a gallery dedicated to emerging artists working in all media, and in 1996 and 1997 she co-organized with John Good the Art Exchange Show, an New York art fair that focused on new art, music and performance that took place in two abandoned Wall Street office buildings. Riccardo continued ARENA through 2004, having it sited in Soho, Cobble Hill, Williamsburg, and Chelsea at various times launching many artists very early in their careers such as Joanne Greenbaum, Rachel Harrison, Fabian Marcaccio, Jason Middlebrook, Marilyn Minter, Vik Muniz, Wangechi Mutu, Mickalene Thomas and Kehinde Wiley among dozens of other now well known artists. In 2004 she established ARENA Projects, a roving curatorial and consulting entity.

Lee Shapiro is a Psychologist who grew up in New York City on the Lower East Side. He attended two different private Quaker schools and graduated from Vassar College in 1995. He received a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Teacher's College, Columbia University and his Doctor of Psychology (PsyD), from the Ferkauf School of Psychology, Yeshiva University. His dissertation was on Post-College Transition. During his doctoral training he worked at both New York University and Marymount Manhattan College's counseling centers, as well as the Forensic Service of Kings County Hospital. He did his Internship at North Central Bronx Hospital. After completing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital he took a staff psychologist position at Woodhull Hospital where he worked in both the adult outpatient clinic and Inpatient service from 2007 until March 2013, when he entered full time private practice. In June of 2010 he completed the Eastern Group Psychotherapy Society's, "The One Year Training Program", and is qualified to be a Certified Group Psychotherapist. He has been working in private practice in downtown Manhattan since 2009. He is currently developing a business called Traversegroups, geared towards helping recent college graduates manage the transition of emerging adulthood.

Do you ever feel that you can't keep up with technological progress? Could you live without your smartphone? Have you ever taken a consumer electronics item apart? What would you do if electricity stopped? Does digital stimulation make your brain better or worse? Do you prefer people or machines?

The work of artist Paul Granjon repeatedly raises questions about our relation to technology or, in his own words, about the co-evolution of humans and machines. He makes robots and other electro-mechanical-digital devices that home-in on current trends of gadgetry and techno-social aspects of our daily lives. Granjon's current interests are in creative technology approaches to low-impact living, electronic-waste upcycling, social dynamics for alternative futures and artificial creatures.

Taking place within London's Anxiety Arts Festival, Is technology eating my brain? is a platform for reflection, dialogue and construction. Granjon's seven weeks residency/exhibition at Watermans will combine regular sessions with a group of local participants and an ongoing deployment of new work in the gallery space.
Granjon will create new work on site that will tap into creative upcycling, automated environments, cyber-botanic symbiosis, artificial creatures and a general sense of science fiction happening.

100% (pure) Crap manifests the current resurgence of anti-aesthetics that controverts the idea of privileged aesthetic realm. Composed of myriad cheap objects and a barrage of assorted trash that is screwed to a flat or dimensional piece of wood, this "cross-disciplinary neo-aesthetic" artwork can be an assault on the viewer's intellect or refreshing data for the senses. The result is an objective that cannot be achieved through any other methodology. Screwing crap to a flat surface becomes the ultimate act of disruptive embellishment, a powerful gesture that liberates imagination and rescues beauty.

100% (pure) Crap is a collaborative, self-curated project of internationally exhibited artists Istvan Kantor and Shalom Neuman. Neuman's multi-sensory artworks speak to his lifelong commitment to Fusionism, the seamless integration of all artistic disciplines into a genre all its own. His ritual engagement to explore scrap, detritus and leftovers can be retraced in his early works. Istvan Kantor aka Monty Cantsin, Neoist open-pop-star and renegade art criminal, contributes his unlimited drive to the growing confusion of crap-art trained through his guerilla interventions. Splashing his blood on white museum walls has become part of his ongoing Blood Campaign project. (In 1988 he was charged by the MOMA with $10 million worth of damage to a Picasso).

100% (pure) Crap is a tribute to the instinct of creation. Both Kantor and Neuman were part of the Rivington School during the dissident and frantic LES art scene in the 1980s, embellishing=defacing the streets and empty lots with graffiti, scrap metal sculptures, junk art, fire performances and other uncommon materials, leaving highly significant historical marks in New York's Lower East Side.

100% (pure) Crap commemorates the 30tht anniversary of FusionArts Museum on the Lower East Side of NYC, which was founded by Shalom Neuman in 1984.
On Saturday, May 10th from 12:00 pm to Midnight, members of the Rivington School will reunite at FusionArts Museum to create a new piece of Crap Art.
A second event devoted to poetry, spoken word and noise will take place on Saturday, May 17th, at FusionArts Museum featuring The Unbearables and special guests.

RUMSTICK ROAD has been recognized by critics and scholars as a landmark work that helped usher in a new era of experimental performance.

Composed by Spalding Gray and Elizabeth LeCompte in response to the suicide of Gray's mother, RUMSTICK ROAD combines Gray's personal recorded conversations, family letters, the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, 35mm slides, music, and dance.

This new video reconstruction of RUMSTICK ROAD keeps faith with the theater piece by registering, in a new composite, the texture of time and memory that shaped the original. LeCompte and filmmaker Ken Kobland have worked with Wooster Group archivist Clay Hapaz to layer, juxtapose, and blend together archival fragments in order to reconstruct the lost performance. The result transcends theatrical documentation to become a major work of experimental video in its own right.

The original 1977 theater piece was directed by Elizabeth LeCompte and composed by Spalding Gray and LeCompte in collaboration with Libby Howes, Bruce Porter, and Ron Vawter.
Ben Brantley of The New York Times writes: "Here is early, raw evidence both of the Wooster Group's displacing use of technology in live performance and of Spalding Gray's gift for translating deep self-absorption into accessible art . . . The play accumulates and deploys clues artfully and assiduously, all the while knowing the mystery at its center can never be solved . . .There is heartbreaking beauty in this elusiveness, and somehow the distancing effect created by recorded performance only enhances that feeling. While many Americans learned that Betsy Ross was the maker of the nation's first flag in the 1770s, that portion of flag history continues to be debated due to lack of substantive documentation. In Maryland, we know that during the War of 1812 flag maker Mary Pickersgill sewed the original Star-Spangled Banner in a house on the same city block as the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. Before becoming a national icon, the flag was worked on also by Grace Wisher, a young African American indentured servant in Pickersgill's household. Wisher's story is little known. This forthcoming exhibition from the Reginald F. Lewis Museum highlights Wisher's contribution as it investigates the broader history and representation of the United States flag as an icon of our nation and its people.

DESCRIPTION
"For Whom It Stands: The Flag and the American People" is a 3200 square foot exhibition featuring more than 75 works of art, artifacts, documents, and photographs. Images like the one of a "Negro woman worker" making flags for military use in 1942 give a glimpse of the stories the exhibition will explore. "For Whom It Stands" is especially interested in how individuals and groups with different histories and agendas engage the icon. Visual artists-painters, folk artists, conceptual, and pop artists-have employed the U.S. flag for their own aesthetic and political effects. The flag also carries deep meaning for war veterans, new immigrants, everyday people, and entertainers called upon to perform the national anthem.

"For Whom It Stands" will include a sound installation featuring pivotal interpretations of "The Star-Spangled Banner" anthem. The museum is also exploring plans for an outdoor flag photomural; a small companion exhibition at The Star-Spangled Banner Flag House; and an array of interactive, educational public programs for youth and adults.

Since his arrival in New York in 1969, the French artist Michel Auder (b. 1945, Soissons, France) has authored more than five hundred video works that chart five decades of the medium's history. Employing new video formats as they become available, many of which have quickly fallen into obsolescence, Auder has prolifically produced short and feature films as well as video installations and photography that transgress genres, gleaning the fields of art history, literature, commercial television, and experimental cinema. At once poetic and critical, cruel and confessional, Auder's casually virtuosic oeuvre continues to disrupt traditional perceptual habits of moviegoers and art audiences alike, subverting notions of filmic narrative and process.

Stories, Myths, Ironies, and Other Songs: Conceived, Directed, Edited, and Produced by M. Auder includes "Twenty Film-Poems for M. Auder," a series of mini-essays on selected videos by Quinn Latimer, an American poet and critic based in Basel, as well as "Portrait of the Marauder," an extensive interview with the artist by Adam Szymczyk, director of Kunsthalle Basel and artistic director of documenta 14. The book, which also includes a catalogue raisonné of Auder's video works, was designed by Julia Born, a Swiss graphic designer who lives and works in Berlin.

This publication was conceived on the occasion of the exhibitions Stories, Myths, Ironies, and Other Songs: Conceived, Directed, Edited, and Produced by M. Auder, on view at Kunsthalle Basel, June 9-August 25, 2013, and curated by Adam Szymczyk; and Michel Auder: Selected Works, on view at Portikus, Frankfurt, October 31-November 17, 2013, and curated by Sophie von Olfers. DeCordova's Rappaport Roof Terrace and adjacent gallery will be transformed into a
fantastical faux sculpture garden in PLATFORM 13: Roberley Bell, The Shape of the
Afternoon. Amoeba-shaped Astroturf, real and fake flowers, abstracted bird decoys,
plastic fruit, resin planters, and Blob sculptures will come together in Bell's colorful
comingling of nature and its synthetic counterpart. In addition to her outdoor
gardenscape, the artist will also remodel the interior gallery into a domestic scene
with plush carpet, painted walls, and a shelf displaying a still-life tableau.

Dear Friends of The Ray Johnson Estate,

We hope you have a chance to visit RAY JOHNSON: COLLAGES OF ART, POETRY, MUSIC, AND FILM on view through May 7, 2014 at the Sidney Mishkin Gallery at Baruch College.

Ray Johnson (1927 - 1995) was an early proponent of pop, conceptual, performance, and mail art. By the mid-1950s, Johnson was making small collages on which he pasted images from popular culture, including stars like Elvis and Shirley Temple. He also incorporated letters, fragments of words, and text into his collages like the cubist artists in the early 20th century. Yet, by 1958, he parodied the New York School artists with the formation of his New York Correspondence School. He began to mail his collages with the instructions "Please send to ..." creating a vast network of correspondence.

Johnson also contradicted the Abstract Expressionists, the dominant group of the 1950s, by making small-scale work with impersonal materials like newspaper clippings and magazine pictures, rejecting their heroic scale and personal brush strokes. The individualism of the Abstract Expressionists was challenged by Johnson's collaborative method that often required a response from those who received his collages.

This exhibition, curated by Sandra Kraskin, focuses on Johnson's collages with references to art, poetry, music, and film. Born in Detroit, he attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina. He studied with Josef Albers and Ilya Bolotowsky, and he met numerous visiting artists including John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Willem de Kooning, Richard Lippold, and Buckminster Fuller.

In 1965, the art critic Grace Glueck called Ray Johnson "New York's most famous unknown artist." Even now he is well-known only among a select group of artists, dealers and critics. After his death in 1995, the Richard L. Feigen & Company gallery presented a large memorial exhibition which was reviewed by Roberta Smith in the New York Times. She called the exhibition "stunning" and noted that Ray Johnson's early collages "presaged Pop Art." In 1999, four years after his death, Donna De Salvo organized an exhibition of Ray Johnson's work for the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University.

Walk the Talk 2014 is the second installment of the Los Angeles Poverty Department's biennial, on-going chronicle of the accomplishments of Skid Row people and their visionary initiatives. Walk the Talk 2014 includes two events: A peripatetic performance parade on May 24 and a community Come Together performative conversation event on May 14.
SKID ROW MOVERS, SHAKERS, DIFFERENCE MAKERS convene for A Come Together
A Come Together is a community-curated performance strategy conceived by Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD) pal, and 2006 Alpert Award-winning visual artist, Harrell Fletcher (harrellfletcher.com). LAPD members were asked to identify and invite someone they know who is doing something laudable, and important, something that represents the best of the current and future downtown. The people invited will make 10-minute presentations, in any form they see as appropriate, about what they are doing in Skid Row. The presentations can take the form of a performance, a demonstration or a lecture.
May 14 Come Together presenters include a downtown business owner, a pastor/community activist, a visual artist, and staffers and former staffers from some of Skid Row's innovative social service programs chosen by former clients for their wisdom and compassion.
Dora Valenciano worked with homeless parolees from the late '80's until her retirement from the Weingart Center in 2013. Sarah Espinosa of the Downtown Women Center works on job readiness and education, and collaborates with internal and external partners to connect women to further learning and advancement opportunities. In 1998, Rory White designed, founded and ran (until 2008), the Lamp Art Project for Lamp Community, with the idea that the culture of the people of Skid Row was radically spiritual, intelligent, brave and exquisite. Stephen "Cue" Jn-Marie is the Pastor of The Row LA, aka The Church Without Walls, in L.A.'s Skid Row. A former Virgin Records recording artist, he is also a community activist addressing homelessness and a member of the Black and Brown Clergy Coalition. Denise Cornelius is Program Manager for the Women's Renaissances Program at the Weingart Center Association. Fernando Fernando opened F. Square Printing on Spring and 5th. F. Square Printing operated under a combined business/community space model, years before these hybrids were popularized. In addition to its printing and copying business, F. Square functioned as an internet café serving up karaoke, performance and visual art as well as meeting site for community political groups. Recently, his rent was doubled, forcing him to close his doors. At the Weingart Center, Fred Walker is Senior Director of Re-Entry Services, which serves recent parolees, The Veteran Housing Program, Veterans Family Reunification/Rapid Family Re-housing/Veterans Prevention of Homelessness Projects. Fred's vision is for Skid Row residents to acquire the means to successfully experience the full quality of life.
LAPD mission: Founded in 1985, Los Angeles Poverty Department is made up of people who make art and live and work on Skid Row. LAPD creates performances and multidisciplinary artworks that connect the experience of people living in poverty to the social forces that shape their lives and communities. LAPD's works express the realities, hopes, dreams and rights of people who live and work in L.A.'s Skid Row.
Walk the Talk celebrates a long process of community engagement including performances, exhibitions, public conversations, and interviews with the aim of enlisting community brain power to identify initiatives and people whose actions have helped weave the social fabric of Skid Row. Walk the Talk is a peoples' history of the community. LAPD tells the story you don't hear elsewhere: the story of the community as told by the community. Walk the Talk supports LAPD's larger social practice methodology, a body of acclaimed work widely acknowledged as "some of the most uncompromising political theater" (Artforum). LAPD's Walk the Talk is made possible in part by grants from the City of Los Angeles, Department of Cultural Affairs, Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Art Matters and The LIA Fund.

Savio, Snowden brought together for musical number

Mario Savio and Edward Snowden walk into an art gallery - and sing "I Got You Babe."
It's more political than you might think. And not just because the Free Speech Movement icon and the NSA whistle-blower also wail Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come."
"Planet Snowvio," which makes its debut in the form of a staged concert-reading Sunday at UC Berkeley Art Museum, is "a musical pop parody" by multimedia conceptual artist Jay Critchley. A longtime resident of Provincetown, Mass. - at the far tip of Cape Cod - the 67-year-old Critchley has spent half his life creating projects ranging from installations and rituals to mock corporations (such as his Old Glory Condom Corporation), on gender, environmental and other political themes, usually with a comic edge.
"Snowvio" is something of a prelude to the FSM 50th anniversary celebrations coming in the fall. The Golden Jubilee gets under way Sept. 26 with events scheduled throughout the fall. Playwright Joan Holden and songwriter Bruce Barthol are collaborating with Daniel Savio, Mario's son, on "FSM," a Stagebridge production being developed with Berkeley Rep in its Ground Floor summer program.
"Snowvio" isn't part of the scheduled events. At least not yet. The one-shot reading is part of "The Possible," a four-month-long experimental arts exhibition at the museum (through May 25) involving a wide variety of artists. Critchley was invited to participate by artist Raphael Noz as part of "The Something," an ongoing participatory music and video installation.
"He had no idea this is what I was going to come up with," Critchley says after a rehearsal last week in a UC music studio. "Neither did I.
"It was really serendipitous. The first thing I thought of was Mario Savio. And wait a minute! I checked the date on the FSM and it was 50 years. I'd been closely following Snowden's revelations, so I thought I'd do something about the two of them meeting, maybe a puppet thing or a music video. But then I started reading Mario's biography and this is what came out."
Writing and reading, while he advertised for Bay Area actors and a pianist, Critchley crafted a piece for Snowden, Savio, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama. As seen in the hastily organized first rehearsal, with Critchley, three days after his arrival, filling in for the actors playing Savio (Alyssa Stone) and Obama (Andre San-Chez), the script borrows heavily from Savio's and Snowden's speeches and writings, punctuated by pop songs with rejiggered lyrics.
It's evolved beyond his own expectations. The pianist he connected with, Masis Parunyan of UC's Music Department, put together a 10-piece orchestra ("I don't regard myself as a piano player," he says. "I much prefer using other players"). Critchley, clearly energized by their first rehearsal, relishes rehearsing the songs with his Snowden (Jesse Cortez, with a resonant falsetto) and Putin (a jazzy Richard Kalman).
"There's always some kind of musical element in what I do," he says. For good reason.
Born and raised in Connecticut, in "a family of eight brothers and sisters, an Irish Catholic American family," Critchley had a musical childhood. "We sang barbershop music together. My father taught us by ear and we started performing, all around the state. So, we were on 'The Arthur Godfrey Show,' and 'The Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour.' I was in sixth grade. My mother would spend the night hemming skirts and we'd pile into the '56 Chevy to go down to New York and be on live TV."
It wasn't until he moved to Provincetown that he began making art. "That's where everything happened. I came out as a gay man, and then I came out as an artist. Being an artist was buried even deeper than being gay."
He began with a series of "Sand Cars," annual installations of sand-encrusted cars - the second featured "Ronnie and Nancy Reagan in the front seat and the two kids in the back" - and later encrusted an entire abandoned motel (which featured a video of Putin and his wife). He's well known for large-scale performance-ritual events, such as the 27-year-old Swim for Life AIDS benefits. His Old Glory Condoms ("worn with pride nation-wide, never flown at half-mast") made news in San Francisco in '07 when Critchley fashioned a 3-foot scale model of the Transamerica Pyramid from them for an installation at the Lab. Transamerica was not amused, but Critchley, fresh from a long legal battle with the U.S. Trademark Office ("They said it was immoral to connect the flag with sex") was not deterred.
For Critchley, the issue was more about safe sex than politics. "Snowvio" stems from what he sees as a similar ethical connection between Savio and Snowden.
"I don't think the basis of their activism was strictly political, either of them. I think it was moral. Mario was not an ideological person. He was looking for the truth, and I think that comes out of his Catholic background. He talks about it, the power of Catholicism's teachings on injustice, inequality, poverty. I see that as Snowden's mission as well. This is about getting the information out to the public so that people can decide what to do about it.
"And that makes them hugely influential. The times are very different, but the effects they had are really long-ranging."

I am Bleeding All Over the Place: Studies in directing or nine encounters between me and you.
"I am Bleeding All Over the Place..." is a protracted performance in the form of a series of studies on directing. The New Museum presents the first three of nine studies that comprise this two-year project. Each iteration takes a variety of forms: some will be clearly scripted, scored, and rehearsed to perfection, while others will be developed or literally "written" in front of an audience. This examination of the director's role through different encounters argues that bodies are never neutral. "I am Bleeding All Over the Place" proposes a kind of theater where each person operates as both reader and maker, and where the potency of a performance happens in the experiential, emotional, and phenomenological gaps produced by encounters between bodies.
