Decolonization: A Class Project, an installation/performance by jc lenochan, will be at the Mason Gross Galleries Project Room in New Brunswick, NJ from Sept. 14-Nov. 15.

Decolonization: a class project is a public performance/installation critique of American education as an institution for re-colonization. jc will install a classroom environment complete with school desks, book sculptures, drawings, video and an interactive chalkboard for the public to respond to national pedagogical concerns such all inclusive curriculums, culture bias, perceptions of otherness and whiteness as a fabrication. Throughout the course of the installation jc will also incorporate performative lectures reminiscent of historical processes that have informed the dialogue for an authentic revolution through true pedagogy. jc states, "The need to re-think what we have been taught is crucial in the context of epistemological fatalism. How we perceive ourselves is synonymous with how we see the world; the difference is domesticated thinking versus international thinking, with absolute certainty that some information that is reinforced in the classroom daily is counterproductive to true growth and knowledge and only serves the dominant ideology or class."

Although he acknowledges that our last bout in confronting these issues is institutionalized racism, this installation is predicated on the question, "What are the social and psychological repercussions, consequences and ramifications behind mis-informing and mis-educating a generation or the public?"
jc lenochan's installation/performance "Decolonization: a class project" in the Project Space at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, will be on view from Sept.-Nov. 15, 2012, Reception will be Friday Sept. 19th from 6-9pm.

The Hunter College Art Galleries are pleased to present "Times Square Show Revisited," an in-depth look at the original Times Square Show, on view from September 14-December 8, 2012. Times Square Show Revisited is the first focused assessment of the landmark 1980 exhibition organized by the artist group Collaborative Projects, Inc.
The Times Square Show, hailed by the Village Voice as "The First Radical Art Show of the '80s," included some one hundred artists and sprawled across four floors and the basement of a disused massage parlor on the corner of 41st Street and 7th Avenue in New York City. In addition to experimental painting and sculpture, the exhibition incorporated music, fashion, and an ambitious program of performance and video. For many artists, such as Kiki Smith, Jenny Holzer and Tom Otterness, the exhibition served as a forum for the exchange of ideas, a testing-ground for work in progress, and a catalyst for exploring new artistic directions.

With contributions from over 40 artists of the more than 100 originally participating, Times Square Show Revisited reflects the spirit of the original with a mix of extant sculpture, painting, and video-most of which has not been on public view since 1980. The show features rarely-seen photography, archival material, and ephemera documenting the crucial role of performance, fashion, and music at the Times Square Show.

Times Square Show Revisited is curated by Shawna Cooper, post-war art historian and graduate of the Hunter College Master's Program in Art History, in association with Karli Wurzelbacher, also a Hunter alumnae and a PhD candidate in twentieth-century American art at the University of Delaware. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue and comprehensive website, which include extensive interviews with the participants in the original exhibition. In addition, a lively schedule of public programming will accompany the chronicle of this groundbreaking exhibition.

Happy New Performing Year!

My WILD adventure at the Association for Theater in Higher Education Conference in D.C. last month-- where I performed my solo LAY OF THE LAND and devised an original performance DocumentNation with 32 performers on the DC Mall--has charged me up for the super exciting projects, performances and workshops coming up. There was something about creating a piece in just three rehearslas about the foundational documents of the US that is just so at the heart of all my work. Also the gathering of the 32 performers inclduing several dept chairs, many profesors, grad students and undergrads really inspired me about the extraordinary art & heart in higher eductaion theater and performance. There are tons of fotos at the ATHE Facebook page.

I am very excited about all my projects coming up this fall. One of the really juicy things is two universities - the University of Colorado and Wake Forest University- are making a much bigger commitment to me and are bringing me in to direct mainstage original devised projects as part of their season. First up is University of Colorado where I will spend a month creating a 70 minute piece called Litmus. See the gorgeous saucy poster below!

LITMUS will be a high-energy original performance exploration of how America divides and decides presented the weekend before the national election. Sparks will fly! Bring your litmus test kits!

Benedictine University at Springfield will be exhibiting the artwork of internationally known multi-media artist Colette (aka Colette Justine, aka Colette Maison Lumiere and aka Laboratoire Lumiere). Her work will be on display in the Charles E. Becker Library located on the Benedictine University at Springfield campus at 1500 N. Fifth St., Springfield, Ill.

A gallery opening will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 17. The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display during regular library hours in Becker Gallery, located in Becker Library through October 15, 2012.

In conjunction with the gallery opening, Colette will be offering a gallery talk discussing her installations and artwork, as well as discussing her "current persona" as an artist, that evening in the historic Brinkerhoff Home located on the campus of Benedictine University at Springfield. The artist will also be constructing an installation on the campus of Benedictine University at Springfield and it will be revealed on the night of the exhibit opening.

As a performance artist, Colette has fused art and life to reinvent herself repeatedly after "dying" and taking on other personas in her work while exploring male and female gender roles. In her artwork, Colette uses different guises and personas where she often appears as the central element in soft fabric environments.

According to art critic Alexandra Anderson for Art Net (2007), "Colette's pioneering street performances in the 1970s brought the avant-garde art form into the public eye. Her beautiful installations at such locations as the Fiorucci store on 59th Street in Manhattan, at The Clocktower and PS i, and in various European venues such as Berlin and Rome, brought crucial attention to this vital genre of work. Her work has also had a huge influence on Pop culture (without Colette we would not have had many aspects of Madonna, for example). Her altered photographs have been widely exhibited and published to critical acclaim."

The summer artists in residence at CounterPULSE, Seth Eisen and Xandra Ibarra, are engaged in acts of queer history making. Seth Eisen brings to life the little-known professor, tattoo artist, and gay pioneer, Sam Steward with his piece Homo File. In her work Fuck My Life (FML), Xandra Ibarra meditates on the sordidly glamorous lives of "latina bombshells", contemplating the destiny of her own queer burlesque personae - La Chica Boom. In a smorgasbord of form, from physical theater and puppetry to ethnic drag and grotesque clowning, this double-bill will be a feast for the eyes and a playground for the imagination.

The CounterPULSE artist residency is designed to encourage risk, supporting work that asks us to experience and contemplate the pressing questions of our time in new and unfamiliar ways. This summer we confront the (im)possibilities of the present by looking into the past. As he did so successfully with his critically acclaimed work, Blackbird: Honoring a Century of Pansy Divas, Eisen rigorously combs through queer histories to uncover the untold stories of the gay history heroes who came before. Ibarra applies her visual storytelling skill and to make visceral the theoretical, composing moving images rich with symbols and signs of political and cultural weight.

Homo File
Seth Eisen writes and directs an ensemble of multidisciplinary performers/artists/collaborators including Ned Brauer, Elana Isaacs, K. Lisette, Rich Hutchison, and Diego Gomez, chronicling the life of Sam Steward (1909-1993) with puppetry, live music, video, movement and physical theater. Steward was a college professor, a prolific author of homoerotic fiction, an influential tattoo artist, and Queer sexual maverick who lived his last 3 decades in the Bay Area. His artistic development and Queer self-awareness evolved through friendships with Alfred Kinsey, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, Thornton Wilder, George Platt Lynes as well as numerous other LGBT luminaries. Steward and his circle helped shape contemporary Queer culture despite the repressive climate in which they lived. Homo File will combine The piece will continue Eye Zen Art's tradition of creating visually dynamic, interdisciplinary work with a focus on Queer history, aesthetics and sensibilities.

Fuck My Life (FML)
Evan Johnson directs Xandra Ibarra as she animates a pair of colorful characters in this solo performance. In an era rife with rampant Mexiphobia, a foul-mouthed cockroach maps the journey of a queer burlesque performer named La Chica Boom. After 10 years of performing Spic-tacles on and off stage, La Chica Boom is forced to interrogate her method for insurrection. Inspired by the original Mexican spitfire Lupe Velez who purportedly died with her head in the toilet, Chica spends night after night pacing her bathroom floor and staring into the porcelain bowl.

About the Artists:
Seth Eisen
Seth Eisen's work is a hybrid of visual art and live performance expanding the dialogue between various disciplines. In 1994 he developed the company Eye Zen Art as an umbrella for curating exhibits, producing performance, visual art projects and installations featured at The Oakland Museum of California, Theater Artaud, Zeum, Yerba Buena Center, SOMARTS, Theater of Yugen, and CounterPulse. He performed with Butoh companies Harupin-Ha and Ink Boat from 1994-1999 and from 2000-2010 with Keith Hennessy and Circo Zero touring in the US and Europe. Seth's critically acclaimed solo show, Blackbird: Honoring a Century of Pansy Divas, sold out two San Francisco runs and received funding from Zellerbach Family Foundation, San Francisco Arts Commission (IAC) and numerous individual donors.

Xandra Ibarra
Xandra Ibarra is a Bay Area based performer that performs under the alias of La Chica Boom. You can catch her making tacos with her panties, giving birth to hitachi wands, and dominating piñatas at gay bars, theaters, museums, and nightclubs throughout the country. Her work ranges from short acts to full-length escandalos, includes original costuming, and pushes sexual and racial boundaries. La Chica Boom's special brand of burlesque and ethnic drag have been showcased at The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (SF), ACT Theater (SEA), and the Burlesque Hall of Fame (Las Vegas) to name a few.

Beginning September 20th, the Rhode Island Historical Society will host the Firefly Grove in the courtyard of the John Brown House Museum. An art installation by China Blue, presented by The Engine Institute, Inc., (theengineinstitute.org) the Firefly Grove will be on view through November.

The Firefly Grove is a light, sound and interactive installation in the courtyard trees. The artist translates the firefly's rhythmic signaling pattern into sound, heard in Firefly Chorus, and light, as seen in the blinking LEDs while illuminating the fragility of the ecosystem.

The exhibit opening on September 20th will feature a 5:30pm performance of the Providence Ballet Theatre's Youth Ballet Company with additional performances throughout the evening. The Firefly Grove is funded in part by the Black Rock Arts Foundation, John Brown House Museum, the Rhode Island Historical Society, the City of Providence Department of Art, Culture and Tourism, E. Along with innumerable other starry-eyed provincials, the Miser moved to New York more or less because of "downtown." The allure of figures like Laurie Anderson and Spalding Gray, Cindy Sherman and Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Zorn and Jim Jarmusch was difficult to resist for us yuppie-oppressed, MTV-addled Generation Xers desperate for deliverance.

The culture we've come to call "downtown" coalesced in the 1970s and '80s in a handful of strenuously funky places like CBGB, the Mudd Club and the Knitting Factory. Misfit visionaries filled these shrines with sights and sounds - and smells - that weren't on offer anywhere except below 14th Street, above Canal and between the rivers.

Anyone who knows the recent history of New York knows how the story ended. CBGB isn't much more than a T-shirt logo, and its old space at Bleecker and Bowery now houses a high-end fashion boutique surrounded by luxury condominiums. The old downtown aesthetic has for the most part migrated across the East River to Brooklyn and Queens.

So the Miser couldn't have been more surprised and pleased to discover hiding far uptown in plain view of Central Park and Columbia University an uncannily preserved little slice of downtown called the Ding Dong Lounge. And to judge by the irreverent history on its Web site, its proprietors are well aware of and rather defiantly reveling in the effect that manic gentrification has had on the sort of culture that once thrived more than 100 blocks downtown.

On Saturday night the club will host the brilliantly blistering bands Pink Reason and Sightings, both worthy heirs of punk pioneers like the Dead Boys and Suicide.

The cover charge is a mere $8, and drink prices are also retrofitted for the punk era. During happy hour (4 to 8 p.m.) beer in a can costs just $2. For high rollers a can of beer and a shot is $6, all night long.

It would be hard to find a cultural activity more opposed to the vanguard art that defined downtown Manhattan in its 1980s heyday than that classic V.F.W.-hall-packing, grandparent-approved heartland pastime: bingo.

But go tell that to devotees of Le Bingo!, a Saturday night staple at Le Poisson Rouge, the bleeding-edge Greenwich Village club, where the game is hosted by the veteran drag queen Linda Simpson. Winners are promised an array of eccentric prizes and a shot at a cash jackpot. Admission is free, and bingo cards cost $2. Get there a little early to take advantage of happy hour, which runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Even if Le Bingo! isn't likely to remind your Great-Aunt Maude of her Tuesday night charity game at the parish hall, it's nice to know that downtown still has a few surprises up its sleeve.

Here's Looking at You, Conceptualism
CONTEMPORARY art is occupying hallowed halls this season: Andy Warhol at the Met, Matthew Barney at the Morgan Library.
And Conceptualism, which 40 years ago proposed trashing museums altogether, is now assuming old master status in them. It's even getting a historical survey in "Materializing 'Six Years': Lucy R. Lippard and the Emergence of Conceptual Art," a show that opens at the Brooklyn Museum on Friday and provides the back story for a surprising number of other shows, mostly of new art, coming in the months ahead.

Not that the Brooklyn exhibition has blockbuster potential; if anything, the opposite is true. It's a compendium of archival odds and ends: postcards, snapshots, arcane pronouncements. And it's based on a 40-year-old scrapbook of a book with an interminable art-speak title, of which "Six Years: The Dematerialization of the Art Object from 1966 to 1972: A Cross-Reference Book of Information on Some Esthetic Boundaries" is just the first quarter. Compiled by Ms. Lippard, a pioneering feminist writer and curator, and published in 1973, the book remains a founding document of a hugely influential kind of art that emerged from an era of social upheaval and that spurred far-reaching changes in thinking about what art could be - meaning, among other things, unheroic, non-Western, female, ephemeral.

In its feisty early phase Conceptualism wanted to toss painting and sculpture out the window. But reality soon set in: Objects were clearly here to stay, and the new art began to define itself less as anti-things more as distinctly pro-ideas, favoring those that brought art and life into sync.

One work that exemplified that union on a rather spectacular scale was Martha Rosler's "Meta-Monumental Garage Sale," which made its debut in 1973 and will be recreated at Museum of Modern Art this fall. The piece incorporates rarefied art forms closely associated with Conceptualism, like performance and installation. At the same time it's exactly the funky thing its title says it is.

Last spring the museum invited anyone interested in downsizing to donate recyclables to the museum. The response was strong, and for two weeks this fall (Nov. 17 to 30) the accumulated stuff will be hauled into MoMA's atrium for a cash-and-carry sale, the proceeds going to charity. As a shopper you'll get to haggle over prices with the artists themselves. And as you pick through piles of the beautiful, the useful and the rare (as well as junk, no doubt) and put your money down, you may perceive that you're doing exactly what museums do, with a somewhat different class of retail, all the time. Does that make your "Garage Sale" purchase art? Well, that's certainly an idea.

Garage sales are all-American, but Conceptualism wasn't. It had European predecessors in movements like the Situationist International and in artists like Joseph Beuys (1921-86). Beuys was an object maker, but he conceived of making art as a fundamentally social and intellectual process in which everyone was qualified to participate. Artists who studied with him still carry his iconoclastic influence.

One of the most interesting of them, Rosemarie Trockel, will have a retrospective opening at the New Museum on Oct. 24. Her vivid drawings, her machine-knitted painting and her performance-generated weavings - the performers are spiders - unite natural science, philosophy, political theory, theology and art history in ways that Beuys would have loved.

Last year in the show "Ostalgia" the New Museum examined versions of Conceptualism that flourished in Russian and former Soviet-bloc countries before and after 1989. This season offers a further look at such developments in a solo show by the Polish-born, London-based artist Goshka Macuga at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, opening Dec. 15.

Ms. Macuga is a collagist of objects and ideas on a grand scale. A 2005 installation titled "Opportunism and the Collapse of the Second International by V. I. Lenin 1916/Cabaret Voltaire Zurich 1916" brought together sculpture, Marxism and multilayered performance. Her more recent "When Was Modernism?" evoked the gardens at Rabindranath Tagore's art school in rural Bengal, where a century ago artists from India, Europe and Southeast Asia shared dreams of a global utopia.

Ms. Lippard's view of Conceptualism as global - another part of her title was "Occurring Now in the Americas, Europe, England, Australia and Asia (With Occasional Political Overtones)" - was the most prescient aspect of her book. Already in the early 1970s, Zarina Hashmi, then living in Pakistan, had begun making drawings and prints that looked abstract but were based on the floor plans of houses she had lived in as a child. Her work, which is imbued with the spiritual concepts of Sufism, will be on view at the Guggenheim starting Jan. 18 in "Zarina: Paper Like Skin," a show that will unofficially function as a curtain raiser for museum's new global art initiative embracing South and Southeast Asia, Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East.

The Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, who came to the United States as an art student in the 1970s before her country's revolution, has kept the idea of a dual cultural identity at the center of her photographs and often mesmerizing films. As with Ms.Hashmi, though in a different way, Islam has been a focus of her recent work, as will surely be apparent in a retrospective opening at the Detroit Institute of Arts in April.

Meanwhile the broad spectrum of contemporary art being produced by women in or from the Middle East is being addressed in a panoramic series of exhibitions gathered under the title "The Fertile Crescent: Gender, Art and Society." Organized by the Institute for Women and Art at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., and appearing at several locations there and at Princeton University (four of the seven shows are already open), it's the kind of project that only a university art gallery could, or would, conceive of and bring off.

Contemporary art in China is, of course, a huge deal internationally, yet very few of its stars are women; Lin Tianmiao, who has a just-opened retrospective at Asia Society, is one of them. Born in 1961, she is part of a generation that absorbed Western trends from Pop to Conceptual Art and did their own thing with them.

In the 1980s Ms. Lin's was binding household objects - woks, pots, bowls - in dense, suffocating layers of tied thread. More recently she has produced photographic self-portraits in which her Buddha-like face is partly obscured by embroidery. This is art about women in culture but based on ideas and attitudes that don't necessary jibe with Western feminism.

The continent that Ms. Lippard left out of her book in 1973 was Africa, which has now long since taken its place in the international Conceptual picture, as it does in this season's lineup. Of several shows, the most varied and unusual is "The Progress of Love," which spreads over three far-flung locations: the Menil Collection in Houston (opening Dec. 2), the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts in St. Louis (Nov. 16) and the Center for Contemporary Art in Lagos, Nigeria (Oct. 13).

With a complex universal emotion for its theme; a network of contemporary artists from across the world (Benin, Mali, London, New York); and a range of media that encompasses painting and text-messaging, the show has, to riff on Ms. Lippard's title, few aesthetic boundaries and more than occasional political overtones. It is a casebook study in cosmopolitanism, the great, vivifying idea of 21st-century art thus far.

Padin began operating in the University Museum of Contemporary Art, at Insurgentes Sur 3000, University City, September 20 at 19 pm. symposium under the Open Circuit: find three generations of artists that organizes editors under open circuit exposure: two editorials in the Fund experiences Felipe Ehrenberg presented by the Documentation Centre of MUAC Arkheia curated by Martha Hellion and Magali Lara, who also organized the event.

Then participate in the event "Poetry Out Loud" from September 19 where I will make a self-referential poetry reading at the Museum of Poplar. (Museo del Chopo). In addition, a seminar "The comings and goings of experimental poetry" on Monday, September 24, 11-14 and 18 to 21 hours. and, the following day, the lecture "In Search of Legitimacy Questioned Experiental Poetry, 18 to 20 hours. César Espinosa and then read the 2nd Araceli Zuniga. Statement The Poplar on their Biennial of Visual Poetry .

21. Alison O'Daniel, FF Alumn, new film release, at New York University, Manhattan, Oct. 1, and more

NIGHT SKY, directed by artist Alison O'Daniel, utilizes the language of cinema to enact a sensory experience on its viewers. This multilayered, experimental film positions the viewer in between access, overwhelm and denial, creating an exploration of the sensory palette that draws upon the spectrum of viewing experiences that range between Deaf and Hearing.

The 75-minute narrative film parallels overlapping stories: the unplanned desert journey of two girls and a group of contestants in a current-day dance marathon. Through a hovering hula-hoop portal the two stories connect where sounds and characters overlap. O'Daniel has masterminded an atmosphere that combines experimental cinema, live music, synesthesia, sign language, spoken dialogue and purposefully un-captioned monologues so that characters and the audience ultimately gain a sensitivity into the other experience and an ability to re-envision narrative within sound and silence.

Composer Ethan Frederick Greene, Los Angeles-based pair Lucky Dragons and avant-garde percussionist Evelyn Glennie link the two locations through their music, connecting a narrative that unfolds through multiple modes of dialogue and explores meta-communication. Additionally, the film is fractured between the cinematic screen and the actual space of the cinema as the soundtrack breaks: within the dance marathon the speakers blow out and the popping and hissing feedback ushers in the live performance. Either a sign language interpreter or musicians accompany the film with a live soundtrack or Sign, enhancing the audiences' typical viewing experience, and bringing new meaning to the events occurring within the film.

Night Sky premiered in Nov 2011 at the Anthology Film Archives in New York as part of an exhibition at Art in General gallery in conjunction with Performa 11. Starting Sept 2012, Alison O'Daniel will embark on a nation-wide film tour with Lisa Reynolds, a performer and sign language interpreter who crafted the original Sign-score.
