Join the Genesis artists-in-residence, Genesis board members, LA-based artists Emily Mast and Simone Forti, Lara Bank (Sea and Space), Jan Williamson (18th Street Arts Center) and more in discussing work that engages the body, the places in which this work is developed and exhibited, and the gaps between various movement- and body-based approaches in contemporary practice.

Please bring with you an image, sentence, video clip, performance, or experience that in some way embodies or informs your understanding of present-day Los Angeles artwork that engages with the body in any way (via process and/or product). Everyone in attendance will have 1-minute to share their example - perhaps your own work, or perhaps someone else's that you find interesting, followed by a discussion.

Genesis Project, Los Angeles is a collaborative artist residency, located at Sea and Space Explorations for its inaugural year, catering to those whose practices' exist between disciplines and work with and through the body. Modeled afterGenesis, Dublin, Ireland, the concept for the project began in 2004 when dance artists Julie Lockett and Ella Clarke, in conversation with Deborah Hay, the seminal post-modern choreographer, asked the simple question, "As an artist, what do I need?"

Using that question as a point of departure and Deborah Hay's own rigorous, full-bodied daily practice, the structure of Genesis Project, Los Angeles largely focuses on providing an environment where creativity is formalized through a process of investigation and inquiry, rather than a focus on final products/objects/performances/installations.

The project aims to heighten productivity of the group at work while also sharpening the potency of each artist's daily practice. The residents are each provided studio space for three hours a day, five to six days a week, where they engage in daily autonomous practice for the duration of the project. Artist's participating in the residency this year have diverse practices which include the examination of the surface of skin in combination with repetitive behavior and flatbed scanners; non-expressive masks and movement impulses as means for personal transformation; and reinterpretations of traditional Mexican folk dances.

The artists-in-residence for 2008 are Liz Atkin, Cesar Garcia, Alison O'Daniel, Brooke Smiley and Cheryl Banks-Smith.

New York , NY, August 1st, 2008 - NewFilmmakers (www.newfilmmakers.com) announces the premiere screening of “Jocasta”, on Wednesday, September 24th, 9:00 pm, at the Anthology Film Archives, 32 Second Avenue, New York, NY. Admission is $5. “Jocasta” is a 52 minute experimental performance film based on Euripides' “The Phoenician Women” (written 410 B.C.) directed by composer Elise Kermani, in collaboration with cinematographer Alan Smith, production designer Barbara Kilpatrick, and actors Michael Potts (Oedipus) and Marty New (Jocasta). Prior to the screening will be a site specific performance in the Anthology theater with dancers Vicky Shick (Chorus Leader) and Melli Hoppe (Antigone), and four trombonists led by Kevin Danger James (Messenger). During the summer of 2006 artists gathered at a Shaker Stone Barn in upstate New York to film the performance of Euripides' play, what resulted was a twist in the Oedipus story: a modern Euripides (Michael Potts) rewrites the play and decides that Jocasta (Marty New) will live through the deaths of her two sons (also played by Michael Potts) in order to perform a sacrifice to save Thebes, and reunite the rest of her family, Antigone (Melli Hoppe) and Oedipus (Michael Potts).

Music for the film is composed by Elise Kermani, with improvisations by Kevin James (trombone), Tom Chiu (violin), Daniel Goode (clarinet), Skip LaPlante (percussion), and trombonists Chris McIntyre, Steve Swell and Mike Selzer. Jay Stern was the Production Supervisor with Video and Sound Editing by Elise Kermani, and Sound Mix by Paul Geluso. The war scene is an animation inspired by Greek Vase paintings and created by graphic designer Julie Verardi. The script was inspired by Euripides' “The Phoenician Women” translated by Brain Swann and Peter Burian.

About the Artist: Independent multimedia and sound artist Elise Kermani has completed dozens of large-scale productions as writer/director, sound designer and collaborator. She has presented her work nationally and internationally at venues such as The Kitchen, P.S. 122, Roulette, DiverseWorks, Cleveland Performance Art Festival, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Randolph St. Gallery, Texas Gallery, and festivals in Europe including Turning Sounds in Warsaw, Poland, Fraunkulterfestival in Regensberg, Germany and Hor-Fest in Stainach, Austria. Kermani has composed several scores for choreographer Vicky Shick including Undoing (2003) and Repair (2005) and Plum House (2007). In addition to writing scores for dance Kermani has created audio designs for visual artist Barbara Kilpatrick including Venus Hum, a DVD installation which was installed at the New Arts Program Exhibition in March, 2006. In the 1990's she could be seen singing with the all women avant pop ensemble Trousers, and writing music for riverrun Theater productions directed by Marty New. She recently received a PhD in Media Philosophy from the European Graduate School (www.egs.edu) with her dissertation “Sonic Soma: Sound, Body and the Origins of the Alphabet.”

After traveling across the country to glean perspectives from artists and activists on the state of democracy, Creative Time's year-long program Democracy in America: The National Campaign will culminate in the "Convergence Center": a major exhibition in the historic rooms of New York City's landmark Park Avenue Armor with speeches on democracy by artists, political thinkers, community leaders, and activists throughout its run.


A diverse group of political thinkers, writers, theorists, cultural producers, and local activists such as The Yes Men, Reverend Billy, Allison Smith, and Rachel Mason will be invited to give speeches and performances throughout each day the Convergence Center is open. These orations will address topics that change day to day, and punctuate activity in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall—a 38,000-square-foot participatory and social space akin to a public park in scale and accessibility during the course of the show. Creative Time's two mobile, participatory projects will travel to parks in Brooklyn and Queens before convening at the Democracy in America Convergence Center at Park Avenue Armory. The Center for Tactical Magic's anarchist ice cream truck the Tactical Ice Cream Unit will roll through the city in an act of intervention that replaces cold stares with frosty treats and nourishing knowledge. Angel Nevarez + Valerie Tevere's Another Protest Song invites the public to sing political karaoke.


Performative public art commissioned by Creative Time from Sharon Hayes, Rodney McMillian + Olga Koumoundouros, Steve Powers, and Mark Tribe took place in six cities across the nation this summer, presented collaboratively with local partners the Blanton Museum of Art, LACE, the Oakland Museum of California, the Walker Art Center, UnConvention, and Dialog:City. Each of these projects, which explored the history and current state of politics and radicalism in this country, will be presented at the Convergence Center.


Creative Time presents the most innovative art in the public realm. From our base in New York City, we work with artists who ignite the imagination and explore ideas that shape society. We initiate a dynamic conversation among artists, sites, and audiences, in projects that enliven public spaces with free and powerful expression.

China Blue will participate to the eleventh edition of OPEN, the international exhibition of sculptures and installations held yearly at the Lido and in San Servolo, Venice, Italy.

China Blue is an internationally exhibiting artist who creates sound based installations.

“Aqua Alta” is an immersive sound experience created using specialized audio equipment to capture the unique sounds of the waters of Venice via the gondolas that glide through them. This work was inspired by the effects global warming have on the environment, both underwater and above.

The sound of Venice is water. Every minute of every day and every night the sound of water is splashing on the stairs, lapping at the doorways and rising in waves as gondolas breeze across it. From the founding of Venice, to the present day, water is the source of transportation, a symbol of romance and the element that made Venice a major maritime power and a significant trading port. Water is also its problem. Global-warming has induced changes to the aquatic environment causing the waters to swell filling the piazzas and buildings and threatening the daily life and culture of Venice.

The sound installation Aqua Alta is a study of Venice’s dependence on and the threat of water. Aqua Alta submerges the listener in the sounds and the effect of the water on Venice. What is heard are the sounds from the water's edge and underwater recordings, the structural creaks of the gondolas and sounds of water flowing around and under them as they float through the lagoon. Splashes and deep wave sounds of the gondola’s oar as it pushes the boat through the water, and the sounds of the sea life are also heard mixed with the above water search for a radio station that randomly captures songs about the ecology and water. The slow envelopment of the sounds in air of the aquatic acoustics as the waters rise become a metaphor for the dangers to Venice of global-warming induced changes to the aquatic environment.

Conceived and curated by Paolo De Grandis, co-curated by Carlotta Scarpa and held in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the Venice City Council, OPEN X1 exhibits about fifty works among sculptures, painting and environmental installations, situated outdoors, in the unique setting of Venice Lido during the Venice Film Festival.

The Island of San Servolo is a few minutes by boat from the Lido.

PROVIDENCE - Stepping into the musty, pitch-black belly of a mausoleum in Providence's North Burial Ground, beyond several coffin-sized compartments, I find my teeth on edge. I'd be afraid to go in alone, but luckily, I have friends along to fortify my nerve. Lucky, too, that "Cryptic Providence: More Than a Graveyard," a project spearheaded by artist and ringmaster Jay Critchley, provides flashlights at the mausoleum's entrance, so I'm not completely in the dark.

There's art inside the crypt. "Cryptic Providence" features installations throughout this 110-acre public cemetery (there were also staged performances in June and another is planned for Sept. 27, the day before the show closes). Critchley's own piece, "Final Passage," sits in the mausoleum's entrance. It's a vintage Chevy mummified in bandages woven artfully across the hood. He has suspended a handful of Little Trees air fresheners above the car (I guess if there's anywhere you'd need an air freshener, it would be a mausoleum). It's a bold work, slyly tying oil consumption to mortality, and it trumpets Critchley's camp aesthetic.

Walk past "Final Passage" into the deserted crypt and into the blackness, down a hallway, and you'll reach Joseph Burwell's "The Purity of the Vikings." The installation recalls an archeological dig: a hole, carefully excavated, cordoned off by red-tipped sticks. Critchley has said there are supposed to be objects here, faux artifacts to make this dig complete, but all we spy with our flashlights are a large can of Heineken and a tiny vodka bottle, perching on the edge of the hole.

"Is that part of the art?" asks my friend.

"I don't think so," I say, although with art, you never can tell. Critchley later confirms that no, the alcohol doesn't belong in the installation, despite the reputation Vikings had for hard living.

Without artifacts, though, "The Purity of the Vikings" is simply a hole. Degradation, thievery, and vandalism are a problem for "Cryptic Providence," which has suffered since its June opening. Rebecca Siemering's installation in the cemetery's potter's field, where most of the low graves are merely numbered, and those buried there no longer remembered by name, was temporarily gone last week, due to vandals. It features bell-like objects floating on wires over each anonymous grave - a lovely notion for remembering the forgotten and chiding the living.

Critchley has a history of salvaging decrepit sites and making art out of them; last summer, he covered a shuttered old Wellfleet hotel in sand and invited artists to exhibit within its weathered walls. The North Burial Ground fits his MO. It opened in 1700, and lacks the manicured feeling of a Victorian-era graveyard such as Forest Hills Cemetery, which has also mounted occasional thematic art projects over the years, or Mount Auburn Cemetery. Unlike those cemeteries, the North Burial Ground looks scrubby, with patchy, unclipped grass and several toppled headstones. The place is looked after, to an extent; in 2004 a gorgeous statue of a Civil War soldier that had been knocked down and vandalized in the 1970s was properly restored.

The graveyard has a haunted aura, though, and "Cryptic Providence" both capitalizes upon it and struggles with it. Death seems closer than it does in prettier cemeteries, and that's meaty for artists. But when a visitor must wonder, again and again, "Has this artwork been vandalized or is it supposed to look like this?" then the art begins to lose cogency.

As we linger by Justin Pollmann's piece "We Live," my friends and I assume that it's been dinged by a lawnmower. The piece, a fence made up of plaster letters low to the ground, reads "we live on as the thoughts and memories of those we love." Some of the letters crumble and fall to the side. What a pity, we cluck, only to find out later that Pollmann built the piece to degrade. It's a concrete illustration of "ashes to ashes, dust to dust."

Jae Wyllie Willard's "Tree of Life" looks vandalized. The black tree made of two-by-fours is nested with glass bulbs that contain objects symbolizing such things as heart (a picture of a baby), subconscious (a patch of moss), and love (a baby's bootie). Some of the bulbs have been broken. These contain terra-cotta angels, perhaps substitutes for whatever was originally there. Both Pollmann and Willard lean too heavily on symbolism, which gives their work a gimmicky feel.

Rochelle Martin, Jay McGuire, and Valentine Mancini have the best answer to vandalism: interactive art. Their "Message Board" is a small-scale Wailing Wall, a simple chicken-wire fence with scraps of cotton and magic markers. Anyone passing through can write a remembrance. It's something every cemetery should have. And no vandal could reach Jen Raimondi's comic and eerie "Big Hair" without a ladder: She's made turkey vultures out of what looks like human hair and perched them in the crook of a dead tree.

Erik Carlson and Erik Gould offer a lovely imagistic, layered, and informative video, "Strange Loop: An Ethereal Walking Tour," which you can download on your Blackberry or just watch at home on your computer. It touches on ghosts, geological formations, and the history of the cemetery.

Works like these are catalysts, delightfully prompting the imagination in a place already haunted with possibility.

The lost Paradise, the small deaths, women's sexuality, freedom, identity and existence.

Through three installations, consisting of video projections, neon light, posters and photographs in light shafts, Mireia Sallarès presents the viewer with her encounter with various women's narratives of destiny. Through the women's personal life stories, she depicts the way each woman creates her own identity in relation to the social structures. The stories revolve around an Algerian woman and her mobile pizza truck, a young Spanish girl trying to get an American residence permit, and Mexican women, whose sexuality are connected with joy as well as assaults from the country's macho culture.

In "To Have & To Lose", Mireia Sallarès' projections, scenes and installations aim at recreating and reflecting on the cynicism, absurdity, pain and loneliness that she believes the citizens are often suffering from. She gets her ideas from her own story, from her friends, and not least from the people she meets in the public space.

As the very first exhibition space, Galleri Image shows the work, "Las Muertas Chiquitas".

In connection with the exhibition, a workshop about contemporary Spanish art is held the 30th of August in Galleri Image at 14.00, where Mireia Sallarès speaks about her artistic practice, just as Moritz Neumüller, curator, Barcelona, delivers a lecture on Contemporary Spanish Art.

SCRAWL consists of close to 100 different handmade pronouncements collected from the streets and subways of New York City over the past 25 years. The works on exhibition range from the haragious to the habromaniacal (from scary to silly), from terse suggestions to indecipherably complex amalgams of mathematical figuring, philosophical posturing, and political ranting. The entreaties tend to the impassioned and visceral. Whether the ideas are impeccably presented in uniquely beautiful calligraphy, or scribbled, illegible palimpsests, the creators all seek to have their ideas recognized, many silently urging their fellow New Yorkers to right wrongs both personal and universal.

An essay by Harley Spiller, the collector and curator, illuminates the work of the 40 or so people represented in his collection, describing what's captivating about the material, and telling the tales of actual encounters with the "artists." His essay situates the material as an integral part of the human cultural tissue that connects us all, regardless of circumstances. Spiller saves these works to preserve palpably urgent voices that would otherwise vanish like so much ticker tape after a parade. His intention with SCRAWL is to begin a public dialogue about these heady, provocative, and artful human expressions.
