An extraordinary group of artists and dancers will gather at the Lorraine Hansberry Theater on May 31st and June 1st to celebrate and honor the work of one of the most important artists of our time. Pauline Oliveros. To celebrate her 70th birthday, some of the Bay Area's finest musicians and many internationally reknowned performers will perform a retrospective of her work from 1960 to the present in alarge orchestra and small group ensembles. On Friday, May 31st, at 8:00 p.m. the concert will include Four Meditations for Orchestra; Variations for Sextet, the Rova Saxophone Quartet performing Saxual Orientation, dancer Joanna Haigood and The Space Between, a trio with Oliveros on accordion, Philip Gelb on shakuhachi and Dana Reason, piano.
On Saturday June 1st two performances will take place at the Lorraine Hansberry Theater, beginning at 1:00 p.m. and again at 8:00 p.m. During this five-set musical marathon, a four decade wealth of compositions will be performed includingTrio for Flute, Piano and Page Turner', 'Double Basses at 20 Paces', excerpts from the opera Njinga the Queen King: Return of a Warrior, "The Well and the Gentle" and numerous other works. Musicians include pianist Sarah Cahill, violinist India Cooke, percussionist George Marsh, computer artist Chris Brown, the Cardew Choir, and the Deep Listening Band with Stuart Dempster, David Gamper and special guests..
On June 2, the public is invited to share the Pauline Oliveros Birthday Potluck Picnic 1:00 p.m. in Dolores Park. Free participatory performance of the Grand Buddha Marching Band.
